God Has Better Plans

There is a particular kind of darkness that comes when your professional life fractures without warning. It’s not a slow change you can see coming, but a sudden crack, the kind that makes you question everything you thought you knew about yourself, your worth, and your place in the world.

I have been in that darkness. If you are reading this, there is a chance you have been there too or you are there right now.This is not a story about what happened to me. It’s about what I learned in that season about anxiety, faith, and surrender.

Anxiety is a liar with excellent timing. It waits for the moment when something genuinely goes wrong and then it takes that real thing and builds a cathedral of fear around it. It whispers that the worst-case scenario is the only scenario. It tells you that you are failing, that everyone can see it, and that this is not a chapter, but the end.

If you live with anxiety, as many of us do, you know the difference between worry and the kind of dread that rewires your thinking. Some of us manage it with professional support, with therapy, with medication, or with exercise and routine. These are wise and necessary tools and there is no shame in any of them. God made us body, mind, and spirit, and caring for all three is the responsible thing to do.

Nevertheless, here is what I have learned: the tools that manage anxiety are not the same as the truth that answers it. Medication can quiet the noise, and a good therapist can help you see the patterns, but when you are lying awake at 2 a.m. and anxiety is telling you that your life is falling apart, only one voice has the authority to say otherwise – God’s.

In the middle of the most difficult professional season of my life, I chose to pray the hardest prayer there is. Not “God, fix this.” Not “God, give me a way out.” I simply prayed: “God, I surrender this to You.”

Surrender is the most counterintuitive act of faith. Everything in our professional training tells us to take control, to strategize, to drive the outcome. While there is a time for all of that, there comes a moment in certain seasons when your own effort has reached its limit, and the only honest thing left to do is open your hands and let go.

Surrender does not mean passivity. I still showed up. I still did my work with excellence. I still held my head up in rooms where it would have been easier to shrink. What I also did, though, was stop white-knuckling the outcome. I stopped demanding that the situation be resolved on my timeline. I even stopped trying to write the ending myself. With my surrender, something shifted, not in the circumstances and not right away, but within me.

There is a saying that when God closes a door, He opens a window. What nobody tells you is that the hallway between the two is its own kind of hell. You cannot see what is ahead. The door behind you is locked. Anxiety stands right beside you, narrating every possible disaster, telling you that the hallway is your destination; but faith tells you it’s just a passage.

I spent months in that hallway…. months of not knowing… months of choosing, daily and imperfectly, to trust that the God who had carried me through every other season was not going to abandon me in this one.

Faith in the hallway is not confident. It is not the bold worship of a Sunday morning. It is the quiet, teeth-clenched trust of a Tuesday night when nothing has changed and you choose to believe anyway. It is surrendering again and again, because surrender is not a one-time act. It is a daily discipline.

I will tell you how the story ends, not because my story is special but because it follows a pattern I have seen over and over in the lives of people who surrender their seasons to God. The ending God wrote was not the one I wanted. It was better.

An opportunity emerged that did not exist when my crisis began. A door I could not have known about, which led to an outcome that I could not have dreamed of, came because God was working in the background of my story

Looking back, I can see it clearly: the season that felt like destruction was actually redirection. Though my surrender was not easy or painless, it enabled me to trust in God even though I couldn’t see what He was doing and it allowed me to say ‘no” to my anxiety. My surrender let God finish what He started and if He did it for me, He can do it for you too.

Dios Tiene Mejores Planes

Hay un tipo particular de oscuridad que llega cuando tu vida profesional se fractura sin aviso. No es un cambio lento que puedes ver venir, sino una grieta repentina, de esas que te hacen cuestionar todo lo que creías saber sobre ti misma, sobre tu valor y sobre tu lugar en el mundo.

Yo he estado en esa oscuridad. Si estás leyendo esto, es posible que tú también hayas estado ahí, o que estés ahí ahora mismo. Esta no es una historia sobre lo que me pasó. Es sobre lo que aprendí en esa temporada acerca de la ansiedad y la entrega.

La ansiedad es una mentirosa que aparece en el instante preciso. Espera el momento en que algo genuinamente sale mal, toma esa situación y construye una catedral de miedo a su alrededor. Te susurra que el peor escenario es el único escenario. Te dice que estás fracasando, que todos lo pueden ver, y que esto no es un capítulo, sino el final.

Si vives con ansiedad, como muchos de nosotros, conoces la diferencia entre la preocupación y ese tipo de miedo que te reconfigura el pensamiento. Algunos lo manejamos con apoyo profesional, con terapia, con medicamentos, o con ejercicio y rutina. Estas son herramientas sabias y necesarias, y no hay vergüenza en ninguna de ellas. Dios nos hizo cuerpo, mente y espíritu, y cuidar de los tres es lo responsable.

Sin embargo, esto es lo que he aprendido: las herramientas que manejan la ansiedad a veces no son suficiente. Los medicamentos pueden acallar el ruido, y un buen terapeuta puede ayudarte a ver los patrones, pero cuando estás despierta a las 2 de la mañana y la ansiedad te dice que tu vida se está desmoronando, solo una voz tiene la autoridad para decir lo contrario: la de Dios.

En medio de la temporada profesional más difícil de mi vida, elegí hacer la oración más difícil que existe. No fue “Dios, arregla esto.” Tampoco “Dios, dame una salida.” En cambio, simplemente oré: “Dios, te entrego esto a ti.”

La entrega es el acto de fe más contraintuitivo que existe. Todo en nuestra formación profesional nos dice que tomemos el control, que elaboremos estrategias, que forcemos el resultado. Aunque hay un momento para todo eso, llega un punto en ciertos momentos en que tu propio esfuerzo ha llegado a su límite, y lo único honesto que queda por hacer es abrir las manos y soltar.

Entregarse no significa ser pasiva. Yo seguí haciendo mi trabajo con excelencia. Seguí manteniendo la frente en alto en reuniones donde habría sido más fácil hacerme pequeña. Lo que también hice fue dejar de aferrarme al resultado con todas mis fuerzas. Dejé de exigir que la situación se resolviera en mi tiempo. Incluso dejé de intentar escribir el final yo misma. Con mi entrega, algo cambió, no en las circunstancias y no de inmediato, sino dentro de mí.

Hay un dicho que dice que cuando Dios cierra una puerta, abre una ventana. Lo que nadie te dice es que el pasillo entre las dos es un tipo de infierno único. No puedes ver lo que hay adelante. La puerta detrás de ti está cerrada con llave. La ansiedad está justo a tu lado, narrándote cada posible desastre, diciéndote que el pasillo es tu destino; pero la fe te dice que es solo un pasaje.

Pasé meses en ese pasillo… meses sin saber… meses eligiendo, diaria e imperfectamente, confiar en que el Dios que me había cargado en cada otra temporada no me iba a abandonar en esta.

La fe en el pasillo no es segura de sí misma. No es la adoración despreocupada de un domingo por la mañana. Es la confianza callada, con los dientes apretados, de un martes por la noche cuando nada ha cambiado y eliges creer de todas formas. Es entregarse  una y otra vez, porque la entrega no es un acto único. Es una disciplina diaria.

Te voy a contar cómo termina la historia, no porque mi historia sea especial sino porque sigue un patrón que he visto una y otra vez en la vida de personas que entregan sus momentos difíciles a Dios. El final que Dios escribió no fue el que yo quería. Fue mejor.

Surgió una oportunidad que no existía cuando mi crisis comenzó. Una puerta que no podía haber conocido, que condujo a un resultado que no habría podido soñar, llegó porque Dios estaba trabajando en el trasfondo de mi historia.

Mirando hacia atrás, lo puedo ver con claridad: la temporada que se sintió como destrucción en realidad fue redirección. Aunque mi entrega no fue fácil ni sin dolor, me permitió confiar en Dios aun cuando no podía ver lo que Él estaba haciendo, y me permitió decirle “no” a mi ansiedad. Mi entrega dejó que Dios terminara lo que Él comenzó, y si lo hizo por mí, lo puede hacer por ti también.

Mantenerse cerca de Dios en momentos buenos y momentos difíciles

La mayoría de nosotros instintivamente buscamos a Dios cuando la vida se siente pesada: cuando llega un diagnóstico, cuando se pierde el trabajo, cuando una relación se rompe o cuando alguien que amamos está sufriendo. El dolor rápidamente nos pone de rodillas. En esos momentos, rezar se siente como respirar. Es fácil hablar con Dios cuando la vida pesa; cuando estamos estresados, asustados o inseguros. Rezar se siente natural.

Pero la vida nunca se queda en un solo lugar. En un momento estamos celebrando, y en el próximo tratando de mantenernos a flote. Hay épocas esperanzadoras y emocionantes, otras son pesadas y confusas, y algunas son lentas y silenciosas. La vida es impredecible, y los cambios llegan sin aviso.

Sin embargo, la presencia de Dios es el único hilo constante tejido a través de cada temporada de nuestra vida. El objetivo no es simplemente sobrevivir a los tiempos difíciles, sino caminar con Dios tan cerca que cada momento tenga sentido. Cada época tiene un propósito. Cada temporada contiene una lección. Cuando permanecemos cerca de Dios, no perdemos el significado del momento.

Mantenerse cerca de Dios no debería ser algo que hacemos solo cuando los tiempos son duros. Nuestra relación con Dios no está destinada a ser una salida de emergencia; más bien la ide es que sea el camino que recorremos cada día, en la alegría y en la tristeza, en la celebración y en el dolor, en la abundancia y en la necesidad.

La verdad es simple: la relación que cultivas en tiempos de paz es la que te sostiene en tiempos de crisis. Cuando caminamos cerca de Dios en las temporadas de calma, construimos una memoria espiritual que nos sostiene. Así, cuando las tormentas llegan, y siempre llegan, nuestro corazón sabe a dónde volver. Su voz es familiar. Su consuelo se siente natural.

Permanecer cerca de Dios significa invitarlo a los momentos ordinarios: los alegres, los desordenados, los silenciosos. Es como la amistad: si solo hablas con alguien en emergencias, la conexión se siente débil. Pero si hablas con frecuencia, confías profundamente cuando más importa.

Te animo a hacer tu relación con Dios parte de tu vida diaria. La fe se vuelve sostenible cuando forma parte de tus rutinas. Comparte con Dios tus decisiones, tus relaciones y tus responsabilidades diarias. Usa momentos como el trayecto al trabajo, el ejercicio o preparar la comida como oportunidades para reconectarte con Él. La fe no tiene que estar separada. No necesitas esperar el momento perfecto ni la oración perfecta. Se trata de comunicación y conexión constantes.

La vida cambia constantemente. Pero Dios no. Mantenerse cerca de Él no se trata de esforzarse más o de ser perfecto; se trata de permanecer abierto, atento y conectado. A través de la oración, el servicio, la adoración, la gratitud, la comunidad y la conciencia diaria, tu relación con Dios se convierte en el ancla firme que te acompaña en cada transición.

La vida puede cambiar, pero tu cercanía con Dios no tiene por qué hacerlo.

Staying Close to God in the Good Times and the Hard Times

Most of us instinctively reach for God when life feels heavy – when the diagnosis comes, when the job is lost, when the relationship breaks, or when someone we love is hurting. Pain has a way of pushing us to our knees. In those moments, prayer feels like breathing. It’s easy to talk to God when life is hard. When we are stressed, scared, or unsure, prayer comes naturally.

Nonetheless, life never stays in one place. One season we are celebrating, the next we are trying to catch our breath. Some seasons are bright and exciting, while others are heavy and confusing. Sometimes, seasons are even slow and quiet. Life is unpredictable, and changes come without warning.

Yet God’s presence is the single constant thread woven through every season of our lives. The goal is not just to survive difficult seasons; it is to walk with God so closely that every season has meaning. Every season has a purpose. Every season holds a lesson. When we stay close to God, we don’t miss the meaning of the moment.

Staying close to God shouldn’t be something we do only when times are tough. Our relationship with God is not meant to be an emergency exit; it is meant to be the path we walk every day, in joy and in struggle, in celebration and in sorrow, in abundance and in need.

The truth is simple: the relationship we nourish in peace is the relationship that carries us in crisis. When we walk closely with God during calm seasons, we build spiritual muscle memory. So, when storms come, and they always eventually come, our hearts know where to turn. God’s voice is familiar. His comfort feels natural.

Staying close to God means inviting Him into the ordinary moments, the joyful ones, the messy ones, the silent ones. It’s like friendship: if you only talk to someone during emergencies, the connection feels thin, but if you talk often, you trust deeply when it matters most.

I encourage you to make your relationship with God part of your daily life. Faith becomes sustainable when it is part of your routine. Share with God your decisions, relationships, and daily responsibilities. Use moments like commuting, exercising, or preparing meals as opportunities to connect with Him. Faith doesn’t have to be compartmentalized. You don’t have to wait for the perfect time, the perfect moment, or the perfect prayer. It’s about constant communication and connection.

Life’s seasons will always change, but God does not. Staying close to Him is not about trying harder or being perfect; it’s about staying open, attentive, and connected. Through prayer, service, worship, gratitude, community, and daily awareness, your relationship with God becomes the steady anchor that carries you through every transition.

The seasons may change, but your closeness to God doesn’t have to.

Inteligencia Artificial y Dios

Mi vida es muy agitada. Mi hijo me dice que tengo la capacidad de atención de Nemo,y tiene razón. Simplemente no hay suficientes horas en el día para hacer todo lo que deberia de hacer.

Escucho la misa diaria en el carro, hago mis oraciones diarias de Hallow mientras me alisto para el trabajo, y rezo el rosario mientras espero que cambie la luz del semáforo. Siempre estoy buscando ser más productiva, más eficiente, y hacer más con menos. Naturalmente, cuando llegó el momento de escribir este blog, recurrí a ChatGPT. Ojalá pudiera decir que hice una pausa, respiré profundo y le pedí inspiración al Espíritu Santo, pero no fue así. Estaba en un aeropuerto lleno de gente, sentada frente a una cafeteria de Starbucks esperando que abordaran mi vuelo cuando busqué en ChatGPT y escribí: “cómo encontrar inspiración para escribir sobre tu camino espiritual”. Esto fue lo que me dijo ChatGPT:

“Pregúntate: ¿Qué crisis o pregunta me llevó a buscar algo más profundo? ¿Hubo un punto de inflexión, una revelación o una práctica que me cambió?”

Ok, ChatGPT, yo me encargo a partir de aquí.

Ciertamente puedo escribir sobre cómo las crisis o los puntos de inflexión me han acercado a Dios. Tengo mucho que decir sobre “buscar algo más profundo”. Pero el hecho que haya buscado en ChatGPT y encontrado contenido me hizo darme cuenta que todos tenemos un camino espiritual, y todos tenemos una relación con Dios. Pero quizás lo más importante es que no necesitas una experiencia elevada o digna de un santo para mantener a Dios cerca. Puedes hacerlo desde tu vida agitada, confusa y caótica, como la mía, o en cualquier punto en que te encuentres.

Yo le rezo a Dios para que me consiga un puesto de estacionamiento, y por la salud de mis hijos. Hablo con Dios en la caminadora, durante una llamada aburrida de Zoom, e incluso mientras veo televisión. Le pido ayuda a Dios por las cosas más mundanas y superficiales, y también por preocupaciones muy graves que no me dejan dormir. Porque cuando Dios es parte de tu vida, es parte de todo.

Buscar inspiración espiritual en ChatGPT quizá no sea lo más ortodoxo, pero es donde me encuentro en este momento de mi vida. Y Dios te encuentra donde estés. Ya sea un punto de inflexión que cuestione tu vida, o un aeropuerto lleno de personas a las 5:00 de la mañana. Búscalo, encuéntralo, usa lo que tengas a tu alcance para acercarte a Dios. Él estará ahí. ¡Incluso en ChatGPT!

Artificial Intelligence and God

My life is hectic. I have too much on my plate. My son tells me I have the attention span of a goldfish, and he is right. There are simply not enough hours in the day to do everything that needs to get done.

I listen to daily mass in the car, complete Hallow routines while getting ready for work, and pray the rosary while waiting for the traffic light to change. I am always looking to be more productive, more efficient, and do more with less. Naturally, when it came to writing this blog I turned to ChatGPT.  I wish I could say I paused, took a deep breath and asked the Holy Spirit for inspiration, but no, I was at a busy airport, sitting outside a Starbucks waiting for my flight to board when I logged into ChatGPT and typed “how to find inspiration to write about your spiritual journey.” Here is what ChatGPT told me:

“Ask yourself: What crisis or question led me to seek something deeper?  Was there a turning point, insight, or practice that changed me?”

OK ChatGPT, I’ll take it from here.

I certainly can write about how crises or turning points have gotten me closer to God. I have plenty to write about “seeking something deeper.” Yet my searching ChatGPT and finding content, made me realize that we all have a spiritual journey, and we all have a relationship with God. Perhaps more importantly, you don’t need an elevated, saint-like experience to keep God close. You can do so from your hectic, confusing, chaotic life, like mine, or from wherever you are in your life.

I pray to God to find me a parking spot, and for my kids’ health. I talk to God on the treadmill, during a boring Zoom call, and even while watching TV. I ask God for help on the most mundane and shallow things, and for very grave concerns that keep me up at night, because when God is part of your life, he is part of everything.

Looking for spiritual inspiration in ChatGPT might not be the most orthodox thing, but that’s where I am in my life, and God meets you where you are. Whether it is a turning point that redefines your life, or a busy airport at five o’clock in the morning, look for him, seek him out, use whatever you have at your disposal to find him. He will be there. Even in ChatGPT!

Make Your Faith Visible

I love friendship bracelets. I love that they are sort of an invitation to talk to strangers and make new friends. I love that you can put words in them; words that have meaning like favorite songs, artists’ names, or, in my case, my core values. I have five friendship bracelets that I wear almost every day. The words that I chose for each one of them are “Family”, “Mom”, “Mama”, “Keep going”, and “With God.”

The “With God” friendship bracelet led to a very meaningful exchange in the least likely of places: the office. I was sitting in a conference room waiting for a meeting to start when the person next to me said, “Would you mind telling me a little bit more about your friendship bracelet, the one that says With God?” I was a little caught off guard by the question. The office is such a sterile place. There are so many restrictions to be yourself. You’re expected to be neutral, to be distant, and, to an extent, impersonal. It’s so easy these days to offend someone when you use the incorrect pronoun or the wrong word. The question about my faith was so personal. How do I answer it without getting in trouble? I didn’t have much time to think about the answer, the meeting was about to start, so I went ahead with a simple answer: my faith is very important to me, my life is better with God and for God. He nodded softly, the meeting started, and we moved on to another topic.

A couple of days later I received a meeting invite from the same person, no agenda. I showed up fully prepared on the potential topics we might discuss, except he wanted to talk about my faith again. We had a meaningful and candid conversation about what God had done in my life, and he felt comfortable to share his experience. His faith journey had been bumpy, and he didn’t feel close to God, but he saw the friendship bracelet and the conversation with me as a sign, an invitation from God to rekindle his relationship with him.

This exchange got me thinking about how to make my faith more visible, not as an imposition, but rather as part of me – a fundamental part of me. A month later at a work lunch with a large group of people, I noticed someone at our table deep in prayer. When we were done with our meal, I approached him and told him how moved I was to see him, a very senior executive, so immersed in prayer in such a public setting. He was clearly surprised, and, for a split second, I thought I had made a mistake, but then he said, “I would love to talk to you about your faith and your ministry.” Within two hours his assistant scheduled a meeting with me. In that meeting, I told him about my faith journey, about Build the Faith, and about its founder, Christina Dangond. By the end of the meeting, he was teary and emotional and asked me if it was okay to join him in prayer for Christina and her mom, Monica. I thought about the other people sharing the office cafeteria with us; it must have been an odd sight. 

We now have monthly prayer meetings, where we simply pray for a few minutes and talk about the work of God in our lives. Over the last few months, there have been several exchanges like these two; complete strangers wanting to learn more about my faith and wanting to share their own journey, some more timidly than others. I strongly believe that in these rather confusing times, many of us are looking to be closer to God and to feel loved, protected, and guided by him. God’s love seems to be the one and only thing that never changes; it’s always there, no conditions and no questions. Collectively we are finding that, amidst all the chaos and busyness of modern life, God is truly the only source of peace. These seemingly random faith encounters are not random at all. They truly are the realization that, as the world gets more complicated, and for so many more painful, more and more of us need the peace that only God can give, and, finding God and the peace he brings can be easier and more fruitful if someone walks alongside us.

I invite you to make your faith visible, to share your journey, and to speak proudly of your relationship with God. So, so, many people are ready, and even more need it!

Me encanta que puedes poner palabras en ellas; palabras que tienen significado, como canciones favoritas, nombres de artistas, o, en mi caso, mis valores fundamentales. Tengo cinco pulseras de la amistad que uso casi todos los días. Las palabras que elegí para cada una de ellas son: “Familia”, “Mamá”, “Mom”, “Sigue adelante” y “Con Dios”.

La pulsera de la amistad que dice “Con Dios” llevó a un intercambio muy significativo en el lugar menos esperado: la oficina. Estaba sentada en una sala de conferencias esperando que comenzara una reunión cuando la persona a mi lado me preguntó: “¿Te importaría contarme un poco más sobre tu pulsera de la amistad, la que dice ‘Con Dios’?”. Me sorprendió un poco la pregunta. La oficina es un lugar tan estéril. Hay tantas restricciones para ser uno mismo. Se espera que seas neutral, distante y, en cierta medida, impersonal. Es tan fácil hoy en día ofender a alguien si usas el pronombre incorrecto o la palabra equivocada. La pregunta sobre mi fe era tan personal. ¿Cómo responder sin meterme en problemas? No tenía mucho tiempo para pensar en la respuesta, la reunión estaba a punto de comenzar, así que respondí con algo simple: mi fe es muy importante para mí, mi vida es mejor con Dios y para Dios. La persona asintió suavemente, comenzó la reunión y pasamos a otro tema.

Un par de días después, recibí de la misma persona una invitación a una reunión. Llegué completamente preparada para los posibles temas que podríamos discutir, excepto que él quería hablar nuevamente sobre mi fe. Tuvimos una conversación significativa y sincera sobre lo que Dios ha hecho en mi vida, y él se sintió cómodo compartiendo su experiencia. Su camino de fe había sido complicado, y no se sentía cercano a Dios. Pero vio la pulsera de la amistad y la conversación conmigo como una señal; una invitación de Dios para reavivar su relación con Él.

Este intercambio me hizo reflexionar sobre cómo hacer que mi fe sea más visible, no como una imposición, sino como una parte de mí. Una parte fundamental de mí. Un mes después, en un almuerzo de trabajo con un grupo grande de personas, noté a alguien en nuestra mesa profundamente inmerso en oración. Cuando terminamos de comer, me acerqué y le dije cuánto me había conmovido verlo, a él, un ejecutivo de muy alto nivel, tan concentrado en oración en un entorno tan público. Claramente se sorprendió y, por un instante, pensé que había cometido un error, excepto que el dijo: “Me encantaría hablar contigo sobre tu fe y tu ministerio”. En dos horas, su asistente había programado una reunión conmigo.

En esa reunión le conté sobre mi camino de fe, sobre Build the Faith y sobre su fundadora Christina Dangond. Al final de la reunión, estaba con lágrimas en los ojos y emocionado, y me preguntó si podía unirse a mí en oración por Christina y su mamá, Mónica. Pensé en las otras personas que compartían la cafetería de la oficina con nosotros; debía de ser una escena inusual.

Ahora nos reunimos mensualmente, y simplemente oramos por unos minutos y hablamos sobre el trabajo de Dios en nuestras vidas. En los últimos meses, ha habido varios intercambios como estos dos. Completos desconocidos queriendo saber más sobre mi fe y compartir su propio camino, a veces de manera más tímida que otras. Creo firmemente que, en estos tiempos confusos, muchos de nosotros estamos buscando acercarnos más a Dios, sentirnos amados, protegidos y guiados por Él. El amor de Dios parece ser lo único que nunca cambia; siempre está allí, sin condiciones ni preguntas. Colectivamente estamos descubriendo que, en medio del caos y el ajetreo de la vida moderna, Dios es realmente la única fuente de paz. Estos encuentros de fe “aleatorios” no son aleatorios en absoluto. Verdaderamente son la realización de que, a medida que el mundo se vuelve más complicado y para muchos más doloroso, cada vez más necesitamos la paz que solo Dios puede dar, y encontrar a Dios puede ser más fácil y más fructífero si alguien camina junto a nosotros.

Te invito a hacer visible tu fe, a compartir tu camino y a hablar con orgullo de tu relación con Dios. ¡Tantas, tantas personas están listas y aún más lo necesitan!

Cuando Dios está muy ocupado manda un amigo.

Crecí en una familia hispana típica, con muchos tíos, tías, primos, y por encima de todo unos abuelos cuya única misión en la vida parecía ser educarnos y consentirnos en partes iguales. Mi niñez, como seguramente es el caso para muchos de ustedes, me recuerda colores, sabores y sonidos muy particulares, Recuerdo los pañuelos coloridos de mi abuela, las manos arrugadas y firmes de mi abuelo, y el olor intenso del perfume de mi madrina. Recuerdo las chupetas moradas que nos daba mi tía, el olor a sudor y tierra después de jugar al escondite con mis primos, y el sonido de la puerta de la casa cuando mi papá regresaba del trabajo. Recuerdo con claridad el color rojo del brillo de “Hello Kitty” que tenía mi hermana, el olor de la cuna de mi hermanita y el sonido de la voz de mi Mamá.  

De todos esos recuerdos maravillosos hay uno que esta particularmente grabado en mis sentidos, y es el olor de las velas que mi abuela tenía en el altar casero que había creado para una pequeña estatua del Sagrado Corazón de Jesús.  De pequeña, ese lugar me llamaba mucho la atención y un día decidí preguntar para que era. La respuesta de mi abuela fue que era para pedirle a Dios que si estaba muy ocupado nos mandara un amigo.  En ese momento tenía 8 años, y recuerdo haber pensado que era una forma curiosa de pedir un amigo. Y, además, ¿Para que necesitamos que Dios nos mande un amigo?

Resulta ser que Dios tiene los mejores amigos, y los que nos manda son perfectos para las situaciones que estamos viviendo.

Cuando la vida se pone difícil y siento que no quiero seguir adelante Dios me manda amigas que me acompañan en el camino, me empujan a seguir adelante y me recuerdan que Dios tiene el control. Cuando el trabajo domina mi tiempo y todo parece girar en torno a mis obligaciones laborales Dios me manda amigas que me mantienen humilde y me recuerdan cuales son los verdaderos triunfos en la vida.

Tengo amigas que no esperaba tener, y que aparecen de pronto para enseñarme a no tomarme la vida con tanta seriedad. Sus puntos de vista son tan distintos a los míos que sin darse cuenta me han enseñado a querer, respetar y aceptar a las personas por lo que son, y no por lo que yo quiero que sean.

También tengo amigas que me desesperan, me sacan de quicio y me vuelven loca, y al mismo tiempo me hacen dar cuenta que lo que pensaba que eran sus fallas y sus malos hábitos son realmente partes de mi personalidad con los que he batallado toda la vida. Esos amigos son mensajeros de Dios que me enseñan a ser tolerante, y paciente. Y por supuesto también tengo amigos que realmente no son amigos. Que de alguna manera han tomado ventaja de mi o me han causado dolor. Dios los puso en mi camino para enseñarme a perdonar, a tener compasión y a ser amable.

A lo largo de los años he aprendido a esperar esos amigos especiales que me manda Dios. Algunas veces soy yo quien le pido que me mande un amigo para ayudarme con alguna situación que no logro ver con claridad, y otras veces simplemente aparecen para hacerme ver algo que no sabía que necesitaba. Y siempre, siempre, traen un mensaje único de Dios; una lección perfecta para la situación que estoy viviendo, y que solo Dios sabía que existía.  Y no siempre me doy cuenta inmediatamente de los amigos que me manda Dios, o algunas veces no los recibo con los brazos abiertos, particularmente cuando me traen verdades difíciles de aceptar. Pero con el tiempo, entiendo lo acertada que es su presencia en mi vida, y como solo Dios pudo haberme mandando esa amiga.

Estoy haciendo un gran esfuerzo por ser uno de esos amigos que manda Dios. Quiero prestar atención a las personas que necesitan ser vistas; que necesitan cariño, aceptación y amor. Estoy más consiente de las muchas formas que hay de ayudar a otras personas, a lo mejor aliviar un poquito su cruz, o simplemente acompañarle. Quiero ser capaz de ver a las personas que están pasando por un momento difícil, que están solas, o que necesitan ser celebradas y reconocidas. Me doy cuenta que últimamente estoy buscando intencionalmente a las personas que no hacen contacto visual, a los que quieren pasar desapercibidos o que se ven tristes. Quiero acercarme a la persona que esta callada en el rincón, la que parece sola o que se ve asustada. Quiero hablar en el supermercado con la mamá que se ve exhausta, o con el empleado en el departamento de Contaduría que nadie parece notar, pero siempre está allí.

¿Qué pasaría si felicito a la empleada del banco por su manicure, o si le envió un mensaje de felicitaciones al muchacho que tartamudeó durante toda la presentación?. Y aunque muchas de estas interacciones me sacan de mi zona de confort o pueden ser incomodas, siempre me dejan algo positivo o me enseñan algo, y muchas de ellas resultan en una conexión más profunda, aunque sea breve.

Le pido a Dios todos los días que me llame cuando está muy ocupado. Quiero ser uno de esos amigos que él me ha mandado. Porque a pesar de todas mis fallas e imperfecciones voy a hacer mi mejor esfuerzo en su nombre.

When God is Too Busy, He Sends You a Friend

I grew up in a very typical Hispanic family with lots of aunts, uncles, and cousins and, above anything formidable, grandparents whose only mission in life seemed to be to educate us and spoil us in equal measure. Like for many of you, I can say my childhood brings up very particular colors, flavors, smells, and sounds. I remember my grandmother’s colorful scarves, my grandfather’s wrinkled and steady hands and the intense scent of my godmother’s cologne. I remember the purple lollipops we got from my aunt, the smell of sweat and dirt from playing hide and seek with my cousins, and the sound of the door when my dad got home after a long day at work. I distinctly recall the color of my sister’s Hello Kitty strawberry lip gloss, the smell of my baby sister’s crib, and the sound of my mom’s voice.

Amongst all those wonderful memories there is one firmly ingrained in my senses and that is the smell of the candles that my grandmother had in a makeshift altar to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. As a little girl, that peculiar display caught my attention, so I decided to ask why, and her answer was, “To ask our Lord to send us a friend if he happens to be too busy.”

As an 8-year-old I remember thinking it was a funny way to ask for a friend. Plus, why would we need Jesus to send us a friend anyways? It turns out, God has the best friends, and the ones he sends us are perfectly suited for the particular moment in life we are going through.

When times get tough and I feel like giving up, God sends me friends who walk with me, push me to keep going and remind me that God is in charge. When life gets busy and work dominates my time, God sends me friends that remind me what success really is; they keep me humble and focused on life’s real triumphs.

I have had unexpected friends who have taught me not to take life so seriously, and whose perspectives on life are so, so, different from mine that they inadvertently have taught me to love and accept friends for who they are, and not for what I want them to be.

I also have friends who irritate me and drive me crazy, only for me to realize that their quirks and “bad habits” are the ones that I have been battling my entire life. They are God’s messengers to teach me humility, tolerance and patience.

And of course, I also have those who really were not friends, who somehow have wronged me. Yet, God put them in my way to teach me forgiveness, mercy and compassion.

Over the years I have learned to expect these special friends that God sends me. Sometimes I ask God for them when I don’t see things so clearly and struggle to find a solution. Other times they just show up to make me aware of something I didn’t know I needed. Yet always they bring God’s unique message depending on the situation. I can’t always recognize why God sent me a friend, and occasionally I don’t really welcome them with open arms, especially when they bring hard truths; but, in time, I can see how perfectly they fit into my life and how only God could have sent them, because only God knew what I was going through and what I needed.

I am working very hard to be one of God’s friends. I am trying to pay more attention to people who need to be seen, people who need help, acceptance and love. I have become more aware of ways to help others and put aside my selfishness and interests to support a friend, lighten their cross a little bit or simply be there. I keep my eyes wide open for those who need a hand, who are going through tough times or who need to be celebrated. I find myself intentionally looking for the underdog, for the one who wants to be invisible, or the one who looks sad. I want to reach out to the quiet one in the corner or the person who doesn’t make eye contact. I want to talk to the overwhelmed Mom in the grocery store or the overworked guy in the accounting department. I wonder what would happen if I complimented the nails of the girl at the drive through, or if I send a note to the young kid who stuttered during his presentation. Even though it sometimes can be challenging or bring me out of my comfort zone, almost all of these encounters bring me joy and teach me something, and many of them result in a longer interaction or deeper connection, however brief.

I ask God every day to call on me when he is too busy. I want to be one of those friends that he sends, like the ones he has sent to me, because even with all my imperfections and flaws, I will try my very best on his behalf.
