About Sister Mary Marta Soza

Sister Marta was born and raised in Managua, Nicaragua. Early in life she experienced an earthquake which claimed thousands of lives and destroyed her hometown. Later, political unrest, Communism, and persecution, especially of young people, caused her to migrate alone to the USA where she met new challenges. After a family tragedy and deeply affected by these adversities, Sister Marta began an inner search for answers to the mystery of life, suffering, truth, and the deepest yearnings of the human heart. She found the answer in Christ. By Divine Providence she met (and joined) the Secular Franciscans in Fresno, California, in 1994, and later, the Sister Disciples of the Divine Master where she discovered, with joy, an undeserved call to the consecrated life. Although a late vocation, she was admitted to the Congregation in 2000. Today, Sister Marta serves the Lord and His Church through her ministry at the Archdiocese of Boston.

¿Necesitas Sanación?

Y le trajeron un sordo que tenía un impedimento en el habla, y le rogaron que pusiera su mano sobre él. (Marcos 7:32)

Después de una exitosa cirugía ocular hace diez años, mis ojos comenzaron a deteriorarse nuevamente; primero muy lentamente, pero ahora drásticamente. Por eso, no es coincidencia que el Evangelio de este domingo trate precisamente sobre la sanación. Sí, no solo el hombre con el impedimento en el habla necesitaba una cura, todos nosotros estamos en necesidad de sanación, y no me refiero solo a la sanación física.

El 8 de septiembre, la Iglesia celebra la Fiesta del Nacimiento de María, pero este año, porque cae en domingo, la liturgia de este domingo tiene prioridad. No obstante, todos sabemos que Nuestra Santísima Madre es nuestra intercesora más poderosa. Ella inició la misión de Jesús al decir a los sirvientes en la boda de Caná que hicieran lo que Jesús les decía, y el agua se convirtió en el vino más delicioso, un símbolo de la alegría del Reino en el Banquete de Bodas del Cordero.

Ha habido muchos casos de sanaciones milagrosas en las aguas de Lourdes y en muchos otros lugares donde María se ha aparecido. Con su intercesión, ciertamente espero recibir la misma bendición que el hombre sordo y mudo recibió de Jesús en el Evangelio de hoy. En este día especial, traigamos flores a María y pidámosle que medie por nosotros las gracias que necesitamos para la sanación del alma y del cuerpo.

En la primera lectura de hoy, el profeta Isaías dice: “¡Sed fuertes, no temáis! Aquí está vuestro Dios… El viene a salvaros. Entonces se abrirán los ojos de los ciegos, se destaparán los oídos de los sordos; el cojo saltará como un ciervo, y la lengua del mudo cantará.” (Isaías 35:5-6) Sí, los profetas de antaño sabían que Dios vendría a proclamar la belleza del Reino, y las sanaciones milagrosas de Jesús son signos visibles de esa maravillosa realidad.

Tomando un autobús para la cita con mi oftalmólogo, me asombró ver claramente la cantidad de personas que necesitan diferentes tipos de sanación. También vi la alegría genuina de una cuidadora que subió al autobús con un hombre discapacitado, Joe, que estaba sentado en una silla de ruedas. Aunque fue un desafío, no solo cuidó de Joe, sino que se aseguró que aquellos de nosotros en la parte delantera del autobús, así como aquellos que fueron desplazados para acomodar a Joe, estuvieramos cómodos también. De repente, comenzó a cantar: “¡Vamos al cine en el centro, y vamos a divertirnos! ¡Oh, sí, tendremos palomitas!” Todos comenzamos a sonreír con su alegre canto. Cuando llegamos al centro, luchó por sacar a Joe del autobús, incluso con la ayuda de otros. Sin embargo, se mantuvo alegre y alentadora como si la tarea fuera fácil. Luego continuó su camino al cine cantando alegremente para Joe. Con su sencillez y espontaneidad, ella predicó un poderoso mensaje de amor que fácilmente llegó a los corazones de todos en el bus, independientemente de nuestras creencias.

De hecho, Jesús ha hecho tangible el Reino de Dios y el amor del Padre en nuestro mundo a través de sus sanaciones, enseñanzas y al abrazar la Cruz. Todo se trata del amor, de aprender a amar perfectamente. Puede requerir generosidad, sacrificio y sufrimiento, ¡pero vale la pena! Al igual que la cuidadora alegre, llevemos las buenas nuevas del Reino a los pobres, vendamos los corazones rotos, proclamemos la libertad a los cautivos, demos verdadera vista a los ciegos y llevemos alegría y esperanza a los desanimados… ¡incluso en medio de nuestros propios sufrimientos y pruebas!

Me gustaría concluir con una solicitud. Así como Jesús dio gracias a Su Padre Celestial por revelar Su sabiduría a los pequeños, por favor, ¿podrían reflexionar esta semana ante el Santísimo Sacramento, en qué formas la vida de la fundadora de Build the Faith, Christina, ha traído luz, sabiduría, fe, alegría y confianza en Jesús para ustedes? ¡Demos gracias a nuestro Padre Celestial por su hermoso testimonio! Además, ¿podrían rezar un Ave María pidiendo a nuestra Santísima Madre y a Christy que intercedan ante Jesús por mí y por todos los que necesitan recuperar la vista? Yo también necesito sanación.

In Need of Healing?

And people brought to him a deaf man who had a speech impediment and begged him to lay his hand on him. (Mark 7:32)

After a successful eye surgery ten years ago, my eyes started to deteriorate again; first very slowly, but now drastically. So, it is no coincidence that this Sunday’s Gospel is precisely about healing. Yes, not only the man with the speech impediment needed a cure, but all of us are in need of healing, and I don’t mean just physical healing.

On September 8^th, the Church celebrates the Feast of the Birth of Mary, but this year, because it falls on Sunday, the liturgy of this Sunday takes precedence. Nevertheless, we all know that Our Blessed Mother is our most powerful intercessor. She launched Jesus’ mission by telling the waiters at the wedding of Cana to do as Jesus told them and water was turned into the most delicious wine, a symbol of the joy of the Kingdom at the Wedding Feast of the Lamb.

There have been many cases of miraculous healings at the waters of Lourdes and at many other places where Mary has appeared. With her intercession, I certainly hope to receive the same blessing that the deaf and mute man in today’s Gospel received from Jesus. On this special day, let us bring flowers to Mary and ask her to mediate for us the graces we need for healing of soul and body.

In today’s first reading, the Prophet Isaiah says, “Be strong, fear not! Here is your God… He comes to save you. Then will the eyes of the blind be opened, the ears of the deaf be cleared; the lame leap like a stag, the tongue of the mute will sing.” (Isaiah 35:5-6) Yes, the prophets of old knew that God would come to proclaim the beauty of the Kingdom, and Jesus’ miraculous healings are visible signs of that wonderful reality!

Taking a bus for my eye doctor’s appointment, I was amazed to see clearly the quantity of people in need of different types of healing. I also saw the genuine joy of a caretaker who entered the bus with a disabled man, Joe, who was lying down in a large wheelchair. Although it was challenging, not only did she care for Joe, but she made sure that those of us in the front of the bus as well as those who were displaced to accommodate Joe, were comfortable too. Suddenly, she started to sing, “We are going to the movies downtown, and we are going to have fun! Oh, yeah, we’ll have popcorn!” We all started to smile at the happy singing. When we arrived downtown, she struggled to get Joe off the bus, even with the help of others. Yet, she remained joyful and encouraging as if the task were easy. Then she continued on her way to the movies singing cheerfully for Joe. In the hiddenness of her simplicity and spontaneity, she preached a powerful message of love which easily reached the hearts of all regardless of beliefs.

Indeed, Jesus has made the Kingdom of God and the Father’s love tangible in our world by his healings, teachings, and by embracing the Cross. All is about love, about learning to love perfectly. It might require generosity, sacrifice and suffering, but it is worthy! Like the joyful caretaker, let us bring the good news of the Kingdom to the poor, bind up the brokenhearted, proclaim liberty to captives, give real sight to the blind, and bring joy and hope to the fainthearted… even amid our own sufferings and trials!

I would like to conclude with a request. As Jesus gave thanks to His Heavenly Father for revealing His wisdom to the little ones, please, would you reflect this week before the Blessed Sacrament, on what ways the life of Build the Faith’s founder, Christina, has brought light, wisdom, faith, joy, and trust in Jesus to you. Let us give thanks to our Heavenly Father for her beautiful witness! Also, in your kindness, would you please say a Hail Mary asking our Blessed Mother and Christy to intercede before Jesus for me and for all who need to recover their sight? I’m also in need of healing.

The Joy of the Kingdom

If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow Me. (Matthew 16:24)

Despite serious concerns about my safety, I traveled in peace to Nicaragua in January. Fourteen priests, two seminarians and two bishops were put in jail during that time. Nevertheless, I was blessed with a deep, consoling joy, and with the certitude that the Lord wouldn’t abandon His Church. A week later, those prisoners were released to the Vatican.

As I sat joyfully on the plane back to Boston, the young man next to me asked me, “What can one do to stop violence and war in the world?” Then he explained that although he was agnostic, he appreciated the witness of ‘nuns.’ I simply shared that a similar question stirred my heart a long time ago when a civil war broke out in Nicaragua; but surprisingly, I experienced, right there, a profound sense of the existence of God, and the conviction that following Jesus was not only the answer, but also the only ideal worth giving my life for.

I didn’t mention that when I had to face exile, suffering, difficulties, and desolation, I doubted… my love for Jesus was too imperfect and shallow. I am a religious Sister today not because I was brave enough to renounce my own will, my career, and many other good things, but because Jesus kept asking me over, and over again, “Do you love me?”

Now, how does all of this relate to Palm Sunday? Today, Jesus enters triumphantly into Jerusalem, not seeking military power or riches, but as the King of Peace. A large crowd follows Him joyfully chanting “Hosanna!” and throwing palm branches and cloaks at His feet. The disciples must’ve been thrilled and very proud to have followed Jesus for three years; but a few days later, they didn’t even want to be associated with Jesus. In fact, one betrayed Him for money, another denied having ever known “the man,” and the rest fled in fear. Moreover, those who had witnessed His miracles and healings, and the joyful crowd, succumbed to the pressure of the masses shouting, “Crucify Him!”

Yes, it’s dangerous and risky to follow Jesus up close. We might have to make profound decisions that might gain for us the hatred of the world and even of those closest to us. We might be intimidated by the voice of society pressuring us to submit to deceptive demands or succumb to the attraction of material possessions or the subtle temptations of the evil one. Yes, it’s risky to trust Jesus when He asks us to renounce our attachments and securities, like He did the rich young man, and trust that God will take care of us like the lilies of the field. It’s even more so when we are confronted with trials, sickness, suffering, or persecution, like the priests in Nicaragua today.

Yes, it’s very difficult to trust in Jesus, but little Christina did and she did it through the crucible and to the end. She was a true disciple who preached by the witness of her life in consonance with her words. How about us? I know that I failed Jesus when things got rough early in my life; but, as with Peter and the others, Jesus forgave me and still gave me a second chance to follow Him, not just as an ideal, but with all my heart.

I hope that the young man I talked to on the plane saw in me not just words, but a living witness of that joy that is not found in having everything, but in giving everything. The world will believe when they see in us the true joy of the Kingdom because of the consonance of our lives with the way of Christ. I pray for the grace to joyfully align myself every day with more integrity and generosity to the King of Peace.

During this Holy Week, may we accompany Jesus, without fear, to Mount Calvary and stand at the foot of the Cross with Mary and John, and the faithful women. Jesus is now glorious in the Eucharist, silently waiting for us to receive Him and adore Him, and in so doing, console His Sacred Heart, pierced for our offenses, wounded for our sins.

La Alegría del Reino

Si alguno quiere venir en pos de mí, niéguese a sí mismo, y tome su cruz, y sígame (Mateo 16:24)

A pesar de las serias preocupaciones sobre mi seguridad, viajé en paz a Nicaragua en Enero. Durante ese tiempo fueron encarcelados catorce sacerdotes, dos seminaristas y dos obispos. Sin embargo, fui bendecida con un gozo profundo y consolador, y con la certeza de que el Señor no abandonaría a Su Iglesia. Una semana después, los prisioneros fueron entregados al Vaticano.

Alegre en el avión de regreso a Boston, un joven sentado a mi lado me preguntó: “¿Qué se puede hacer para detener la violencia y la guerra en el mundo?” Luego me explicó que, aunque era agnóstico, apreciaba el testimonio de las religiosas. Simplemente compartí que una pregunta similar conmovió mi corazón hace mucho tiempo cuando estalló una guerra civil en Nicaragua, pero sorprendentemente, fui bendecida allí mismo con un profundo sentimiento de la existencia de Dios, y la convicción de que seguir a Jesús no era sólo la respuesta, sino también el único ideal por el que valía la pena dar mi vida.

No mencioné que cuando me tuve que enfrentar a sufrimientos, exilio, dificultades y desolación, dudé… mi amor por Jesús era demasiado imperfecto y pequeño. Hoy soy una hermana religiosa, no porque haya sido lo suficientemente valiente como para renunciar a mi propia voluntad, mi carrera y muchas otras cosas buenas, sino porque Jesús me preguntaba una y otra vez: “¿Me amas?”.

Ahora bien, ¿cómo se relaciona todo esto con el Domingo de Ramos?

Hoy Jesús entra triunfalmente en Jerusalén no buscando poder militar ni riquezas, sino como el Rey de la Paz. Una gran multitud lo sigue cantando alegremente “Hosanna”, mientras arrojan palmas y sus mantos a sus pies. Los discípulos seguramente estaban emocionados y muy orgullosos de haberlo seguido durante tres años; pero a los pocos días no querían ni siquiera ser asociados con Jesús. Es más, uno lo traicionó por dinero, otro negó tres veces haber conocido “a ese hombre”, y todos los demás, huyeron llenos de miedo. Mas aún, los que habían visto sus milagros y sanaciones, y la alegre multitud, sucumbieron a la presión de la masa que gritaba “¡Crucifíquenlo!”.

Si, es peligroso y arriesgado seguir de cerca a Jesús. Podríamos hacer decisiones profundas que nos ganarían el odio del mundo y aún de los más cercanos a nosotros. Podríamos ser intimidados por la voz de una sociedad que presiona a someternos a sus demandas; o sucumbir a la atracción de posesiones materiales o a las sutiles tentaciones del maligno. Es arriesgado confiar en Jesús cuando nos pide renunciar nuestras ataduras y seguridades, como lo hizo con el joven rico, y confiar que Dios va a cuidar de nosotros como a los lirios del campo; pero es aún más arriesgado cuando nos enfrentamos con pruebas, enfermedades, sufrimientos y persecuciones, como los sacerdotes de Nicaragua hoy en día.

Si, es difícil confiar en Jesús, pero la pequeña Cristina lo hizo y lo hizo a través del crisol y hasta el final. Ella fue una verdadera discípula que predicó con el testimonio de su vida en consonancia con sus palabras. ¿Qué hay de nosotros? Sé que yo le fallé a Jesús cuando las cosas se pusieron difíciles temprano en mi vida; pero como a Pedro y los otros, Jesús me perdonó y me dio otra oportunidad de seguirlo, no solo como un ideal, pero ahora con todo mi corazón.

Espero que el joven con el que hablé en el avión haya visto en mí no sólo palabras, sino un testimonio vivo de ese gozo que no se encuentra en tenerlo todo, sino en darlo todo. El mundo creerá cuando miren en nosotros la verdadera alegría del Reino por la consonancia de nuestras vidas con el camino de Cristo. Oro por la gracia de alinearme cada día con más integridad y generosidad con el Rey de la Paz.

Durante esta Semana Santa acompañemos a Jesús sin miedo al Monte Calvario y estemos al pie de la Cruz con María y Juan, y las mujeres fieles. Él ahora está glorioso en la Eucaristía, esperando en silencio que lo recibamos y lo adoremos, y al hacerlo, consolemos su Sagrado Corazón traspasado por nuestras ofensas, herido por nuestros pecados.

The Supreme Importance of the Church

I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven. (Matthew 16:19)

When I was sent to Rome in 2010 to take a course, I was assigned an apostolate in St. Peter’s Basilica. Every day that I entered the basilica, I would notice a beautiful design of two keys printed on the floor. The sight of those keys in that ancient basilica touched me deeply and reminded me how real the promise is that Jesus made to St. Peter over 2,000 years ago. Oh, how my heart rejoiced!

Ten years later, my heart rejoiced again when the Catholic chapel, Corazones de Jesus y María, was built in my country, Nicaragua. This is significant because the chapel is situated in a poor rural area where different Protestant congregations exist. These congregations believe in “Sola Scriptura” (the Bible alone) as the only source of infallible authority. This belief has produced many different interpretations of the Bible and the concept of “Church.” Consequently, some groups claim to be the true church of Christ, while others assert that the Church is not important. This Sunday’s Gospel passage clearly and unambiguously debunks all these claims.

In Matthew 16:13-20, Jesus asks his disciples: Who do people say that the Son of Man is? The disciples reply: Elijah, John the Baptist, or Jeremiah. Then Jesus asks, But who do you say that I am? It is Simon Peter who answers correctly: You are the Christ, the Son of the living God. Surely it was not Peter’s genius or his theological studies that were the source of this assertion. We find the answer in Jesus’s reply to him: Blessed are you, Simon, son of Jonah, because flesh and blood has not revealed this to you but my heavenly Father. Immediately thereafter, Jesus pronounces the astonishing words that so many Christians fail to accept: And so I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my churchand the gates of the netherworld will not prevail against it.

In order to clarify that the rock is not only Peter’s confession of faith, but also his person, Jesus adds: I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven. Clearly, Christ was giving to Peter and his successors a very special ministry with high authority within the Church. We might ask ourselves, “Why, for this supreme task, would God choose a weak, cowardly human being who would deny Jesus three times and then run away to hide while Jesus is condemned, crucified, and buried?” We find our answer in this Sunday’s second reading:

Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How inscrutable are his judgments and how unsearchable his ways! (Romans 11:33)

In other words, it isn’t because of the knowledge, power, or perfect sanctity of Peter (or his successors) that Jesus made these promises. It’s because Divine Wisdom chose it that way and will ensure that Truth is safeguarded in the Church. In fact, it was implicit in early Christianity that the Church would somehow be protected from error when imparting bindingdoctrine for all. Consequently, when the Catholic Church declared the books that were divinely inspired and gave us the Bible, the choice was accepted by all Christianity.

The keys I saw in St. Peter’s Basilica are a powerful symbol of the autority of “Peter” in Christ’s Church, and the assurance of the Divine origin of the Bible; the Bible, in turn, declares that the Church is the pillar and bulwark of Truth!(1Timothy 3:15) Indisputably, the Church is of supreme importance!!

Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How inscrutable are his judgments and how unsearchable his ways! (Romans 11:33)

Thanks in great part to Build the Faith, the chapel in Nicaragua, and the work of evangelization arising from it, has made an enormous difference in the surrounding rural communities of Diriamba. The acceptance of both Church and the Bible is not just a concern in Nicaragua, though. It is a contemporary issue that all Christians are facing. We cannot follow all sorts of different and interesting interpretations and teachings. We cannot build the faith from another foundation apart from the one already laid down by Christ on Peter and the Apostles (cf. Eph 2:20 and Rev 21:14). We, as living stones, must work alongside the Church! We must walk with the Church through her ups and downs, knowing that God’s Truth will be preserved and even revealed in more splendor because of those challenges (See Jn 16:13). Let’s not be afraid, we are built on rock! The gates of Hell will not prevail against us! May we continue to say with our little Christina:

Jesus, I trust in You! I trust in the promise You made to Your Church!!

La Importancia Suprema de La Iglesia

Te daré las llaves del reino de los cielos (Mateo 16:19)

Cuando me enviaron a Roma en el 2010 a tomar un curso, me asignaron un apostolado en la Basílica de San Pedro. Todos los días cuando entraba a la Basílica me daba cuenta de un hermoso diseño con dos llaves impresas en el piso. Ver esas llaves en esta antigua Basílica me conmovía profundamente, y me recordaba lo real que es la promesa que Jesus le había hecho a Pedro hace más de 2000 años. ¡Mi corazón se llenaba de gozo!

Diez años más tarde mi corazón se llenó de gozo nuevamente cuando se construyó en Nicaragua, mi país natal, la capilla Católica Corazones de Jesus y María. Esto es muy significativo porque la capilla esta ubicada en una zona rural muy pobre, donde existen diferentes congregaciones protestantes. Estas congregaciones creen en la “Sola Scriptura” (solo La Biblia) como la única fuente de autoridad infalible. Esta creencia ha generado diversas interpretaciones de la Biblia, y del concepto de la Iglesia. Como consecuencia, algunos grupos alegan ser la verdadera iglesia de Cristo, mientras otras aseguran que La Iglesia no es importante. El evangelio de este Domingo desmiente sin duda o ambigüedad todas estas afirmaciones.

En Mateo 16:13 – 20, Jesus les pregunta a sus discípulos: ¿Quién dice la gente que es el Hijo del Hombre? Los discípulos contestaron: “Elías, Juan Bautista o Jeremías”. Entonces Jesus pregunta: Pero ¿Quién dicen ustedes que soy yo? Pedro es el que responde correctamente: “Tu eres Cristo, el Hijo de Dios vivo”. Sin duda no fue la inteligencia de Pedro ni sus estudios teológicos la fuente de esta afirmación. Encontramos la respuesta en lo que Jesus le contesta: “bendito seas tu Pedro, hijo de Jonás, porque el cuerpo y la sangre no te han revelado esto, si no mas bien lo ha hecho mi Padre Celestial”. Inmediatamente después, Jesus pronuncia las palabras que a tantos cristianos les cuesta aceptar: “Y entonces yo te digo a ti, tu eres Pedro, y sobre esta roca yo construiré mi Iglesia, y las puertas del mundo de los muertos y las tinieblas no ganaran”.

Para clarificar que la piedra no es solo la confesión de fe de Pedro, si no su persona, Jesus agrega: “Yo te daré las llaves del reino de los cielos; y todo lo que atares en la tierra será atado en los cielos; y todo lo que desatares en la tierra será desatado en los cielos”. Claramente Cristo le estaba dando a Pedro y a sus sucesores un ministerio muy especial, con autoridad de muy alto nivel dentro de la Iglesia. Uno podría preguntarse por qué para una tarea tan suprema Dios escoge un ser humano débil y cobarde, que negaría a Jesus tres veces, y luego correría a esconderse, mientras a Jesus lo condenaban, crucificaban y enterraban. Encontramos la respuesta en la segunda lectura de esta semana:

¡Oh, la profundidad de las riquezas, de la sabiduría y del conocimiento de Dios! ¡Cuán insondables son sus juicios e inescrutables sus caminos! (Romanos 11:33)

En otras palabras, no es por el conocimiento, poder o santidad perfecta de Pedro (o sus sucesores) que Jesus hace estas promesas. Es porque la Divina Providencia lo escogió así, y se va a asegurar de que la Verdad está protegida en la Iglesia. De hecho, en los primeros tiempos de la Cristiandad se asumía que la Iglesia de alguna manera estaba protegida de errores al momento de impartir doctrina que fija precedente para todos. En consecuencia, cuando la Iglesia Católica declaró los libros que tenían inspiración divina y nos dió La Biblia, la decisión fue aceptada por toda la Cristiandad.

Las llaves que yo vi en la Basílica de San Pedro son un símbolo poderoso de la primacía de Pedro en la Iglesia de Cristo, y de la certeza del origen divino de la Biblia; la Biblia a su vez declara que la Iglesia es el pilar y principio fundamental de la verdad (1Timoteo 3:15). ¡Indiscutiblemente, la Iglesia tiene una importancia suprema!

¡Oh, la profundidad de las riquezas, de la sabiduría y del conocimiento de Dios! ¡Cuán insondables son sus juicios e inescrutables sus caminos! (Romanos 11:33)

Gracias en parte a la Fundación Build the Faith, la capilla en Nicaragua y el trabajo de evangelización que surge de ahí han hecho una diferencia enorme en la comunidad cercana de Diriamba. La aceptación de la Iglesia y la Biblia no es una preocupación solo en Nicaragua. Es un tema contemporáneo que enfrentan todos los cristianos. No podemos seguir y dar credibilidad a cualquier tipo de interpretación interesante o enseñanza diferente. No podemos construir la fe desde otra base diferente a la que ya construyó Cristo sobre Pedro y los apóstoles. (cf. Eph 2:20 and Rev 21:14). Nosotros como piedras vivas tenemos que trabajar junto con la Iglesia. Tenemos que caminar con la iglesia en los momentos buenos y en los momentos malos, con la certeza de que la verdad de Dios será preservada y revelada en aun más esplendor por estas dificultades (Ver (cf. Eph 2:20 and Rev 21:14). ¡No tengan miedo, estamos construidos sobre piedra! Las puertas del infierno no ganaran sobre nosotros. Sigamos diciendo como nuestra pequeña Christina:

Jesus, yo confío en ti! Yo confío en la promesa que hiciste a tu Iglesia.

Llévame, Dulce Pastor, hacia Aguas Tranquilas

Es difícil encontrar el silencio en este mundo lleno de ruidos; pero es aún más difícil encontrar ese silencio dentro de nosotros. Muchas veces compiten con nuestra atención; nadie es capaz de llevarnos al lugar que anhela nuestro corazón cansado, excepto la voz del Buen Pastor. Aunque Jesús habla de diferentes maneras, a través de diferentes circunstancias y eventos, especialmente a través de la Sagrada Escritura; su voz se escucha mejor cuando estamos en silencio.

La Madre Teresa era muy buena practicando el silencio interior. Cuando estuvo de visita en Boston, ofreció a las personas que fueran a visitarla, unas tarjetas muy pequeñas que tenían escritas las siguientes palabras:

El fruto del silencio es la Oración

El fruto de la oración es el Amor

El fruto del amor es el Servicio

El fruto del servicio es La Paz

La Madre Teresa, una mujer de paz; siempre estuvo atenta a la voz del Buen Pastor. Ella cultivó el silencio interior frente al Santísimo Sacramento, a pesar todas sus ocupaciones. Jesús nos habla en el silencio de nuestro Corazón; especialmente frente a su presencia real en el Santísimo Sacramento, pero necesitamos aprender a entrar en ese silencio interior sin miedo, o perderemos su voz, y peligrosamente seguiremos a la voz equivocada.

Cuando era una niña, escuché la voz del Buen Pastor. Fue durante una visita al señor en la capilla de la escuela a la que yo asistía. Me cautivó la belleza de todo lo que rodeaba al Sagrario: las flores, el velo blanco tan delicado que lo cubría, el mantel blanco en el altar, el crucifijo… Experimenté mucha paz y alegría al estar junto a Dios. Quería estar allí para siempre…siempre cerca de él…cerca del Sagrario. En ese momento me di cuenta que el Buen Pastor siempre me conduciría a las aguas tranquilas de la paz. No me hacía falta nada más, porque él estaba junto a mí.

Es en el contexto del silencio y de estar en la presencia de Dios, cuando nuestros corazones se abren fácilmente a la gracia de El; escuchen y reconozcan su voz. Es a partir de un encuentro profundo con aquel que nos ama y que dió su vida por nosotros, que nos damos cuenta que somos protegidos, perdonados e inmensamente amados tal como somos. Confiemos en él, y sigamos sus pasos. El nos conducirá a las aguas curativas que fluyen del amor de su corazón traspasado, y nos guiará suavemente a la vida eterna.

El Buen Pastor es también el Cordero de Dios ofrecido en sacrificio por nuestra salvación. A través de sus heridas fuimos sanados. Al igual que un cordero confía en su pastor, Jesús confió en su padre, incluso en el momento donde se enfrentó a la más profunda desolación; estar en la cruz. Del mismo modo nos pide que confiemos en El y lo sigamos cuando estemos pasando por momentos difíciles. Nada es más convincente para el mundo, que los ejemplos en vida. Así es como nuestra vida, e incluso nuestras heridas, se convierten en fuente de sanación y paz para otras personas. Tuve el privilegio de presenciar a Cristina, una pequeña ovejita que vivía de fe y confianza en el Buen Pastor. Repetía con confianza durante el crisol de su calvario: “Jesús, en ti confío”. Ella siguió a Jesús tan de cerca, que a través de su sufrimiento muchos recibieron sanidad interior y recuperaron su fe. Que nuestras heridas, unidas a las de Cristo sean fuente de paz, sanación, restauración y esperanza para los demás; y que todos nosotros, hoy y en la eternidad sembremos en los prados verdes de la vida abundante de Cristo, y bebamos de las aguas reparadoras de su amor en la Sagrada Eucaristía.

Jesús, Pastor y Cordero; en ti confío.

Por favor, ofrezcan hoy un rosario por todos los sacerdotes, especialmente por los de su parroquia. Ellos son “Alter Christus” (otro Cristo) de cuyas manos recibimos al Buen Pastor como alimento para nuestra alma; también, les pido que el día de hoy, oren por las vocaciones al sacerdocio sagrado. ¡Estarás haciendo el bien al mundo entero!

Lead Me, Sweet Shepherd, to Restful Waters

The Lord is my Shepherd; I shall not want. (Psalm 23:1)

It is hard to find silence in our noisy world, but it’s even more difficult to find it within ourselves. Many interior voices compete for our attention; none lead us to the place for which our weary hearts yearn, except the voice of the Good Shepherd. Although Jesus speaks in different ways, through different circumstances and events, and most especially through Sacred Scripture, His voice is best heard when we are silent.

Mother Teresa was very good at practicing interior silence. When she visited Boston, she offered small cards, much like business cards, to the people who came to visit her. Surprisingly, the cards didn’t have her address or phone number, but instead, the following words:

The fruit of silence is Prayer.

The fruit of prayer is Love.

The fruit of love is Service.

The fruit of service is Peace.

Mother Teresa, a woman of peace, was attentive to the voice of the Good Shepherd because she cultivated interior silence in the middle of her busy day and in front of the Blessed Sacrament. Jesus speaks to us in the silence of our hearts, especially in front of His real presence in the Blessed Sacrament; but we need to learn to enter that interior silence without fear, or we’ll miss His voice and dangerously follow the voice of others.

I once heard the voice of the Good Shepherd when I was a little girl. It was at school during our 15‑minute silent visit to the Lord in the chapel. I was totally taken by the beauty of everything surrounding the Tabernacle: the flowers, the delicate white veil covering it, the white altar cloth, the crucifix… I experienced much peace and a quiet joy at being with my loving God. I wanted to be there forever… always close to Him… close to the Tabernacle. I knew then that the Good Shepherd would always lead me to the still waters of peace. I lacked nothing in that moment.

It is in the context of silence and being in the presence of God that allow our hearts to be easily opened to God’s grace and to hear and recognize His voice. It is from a deep encounter with the One who loves us and who gave His life for us, that we realize we are protected, forgiven, and immensely loved just the way we are. Let us trust Him and follow in His footsteps. He will lead us to the healing waters of love flowing from His pierced Heart and gently guide us to everlasting life.

The Good Shepherd is also the Lamb of God, offered in sacrifice for our salvation. Through His wounds we were healed. Just like a lamb trusting its shepherd, Jesus trusted His Father even in the crucible of total desolation on the Cross. In the same way, He asks us to trust Him and follow Him, in meekness and humility, when we are in the middle of difficult circumstances. Nothing is more convincing to the world than such living examples. This is how our lives, and even our wounds, become sources of healing and peace for others.

I had the privilege of witnessing Christina, a little lamb who lived by faith and trust in the Good Shepherd. She confidently repeated: “Jesus, I trust in you” in the crucible of her calvary. She followed Jesus so closely that through her suffering many received inner healing and had their faith restored. May our wounds too, united to Christ’s, be sources of peace, healing, restoration, and hope for others; and may we all, today and in eternity, graze in the verdant meadows of Christ’s abundant life and drink from the restful waters of His love made visible in the Holy Eucharist.

Jesus, Shepherd and Lamb, I trust in you.

Please offer a rosary today for all priests, especially your own pastors. They are “Alter Christus” from whose hands we receive the Good Shepherd as food for our souls; and please also pray today for vocations to the sacred priesthood. You’ll be doing good for the whole world!

On the Birth of Our Savior

And Blessed is the Fruit of your Womb, Jesus

In the poverty of a stable, without any pomp or grandeur, God broke into the darkness of the world hidden in the vulnerability of a little baby. The entire cosmos was filled with the splendor of divine light, and the destiny of the whole human race was radically changed! Creation shouted for joy, a wonderful star appeared in the sky and a choir of angels announced the Good News to the humble! How sweet and sacred was that Holy Night that saw humanity and divinity united forever! Bending the knee before the baby in Mary’s arms, let us gaze without fear at the very face of God… and be healed!

The best memories I have of Christmas, are, of course, when I was a little girl. Since my tender years, I loved to sing cute carols to Baby Jesus at my aunt’s humble house. Every year she would faithfully arrange a simple but beautiful nativity scene just to bring joy to the neighbors. In the evenings we would gather around the crèche with other children and happily make a joyful ‘noise’ with castanets, tambourines, and handmade musical instruments while singing (very loudly) to Baby Jesus. Afterwards we would light up “roman candles” that spawned silver fiery stars and would jump up and down until the candles would die down.

One year, however, on the night before Christmas Eve, a powerful earthquake destroyed the city. Our beloved nativity was shattered and lost in the rubble of my aunt’s house. That night we suffered greater losses than that, which broke our hearts and changed our lives forever. Since then, little by little, Jesus has been putting together those broken pieces of my heart and making me more humane and compassionate each day. It was then that I realized that apart from all of us grieving during Christmas, the rest of the world continued their celebrations oblivious to our pain; something I had been guilty of many times before.

Similarly, many in Bethlehem were immersed in superfluous distractions while Mary and Joseph searched with expectation for a room where the Son of God might be welcomed. Finding none, Mary gave birth to her first-born in a stable, because “there was no room for them in the inn.” (Luke 2:7) She wrapped her baby in swaddling clothes and tenderly laid Him in a manger. Sleeping peacefully in that first earthly “pyx,” where animals were fed, Jesus gave the world the most eloquent and sweet message on the Eucharist, and the greatest ever about love and humility, but people were too busy to recognize the Savior.

How about us today? Are we too busy to welcome Jesus into our hearts? Do we recognize Him in the face of every person He came to redeem and restore, especially the poor, the sick, the needy, the abandoned? Or are we too entertained by the allurements of the world to adore Him in the Holy Eucharist? Jesus’ birth in poverty and simplicity should help us understand the message of Christmas and temper our fascination with consumerism and self-indulgence.

I pray today that our eyes may be opened to the new life God wants to give us even in the middle of sufferings and difficulties. Let’s not be afraid! This Child has come to make us free, to give us joy, and to satisfy the deepest yearnings of our hearts! Little Christina understood this well. Embracing her own sufferings with trust, she then focused on giving others the best gift ever: JESUS!

Today, singing with the simplicity of children to the baby in Bethlehem, let us gently kiss Jesus’ forehead, which will receive a crown of thorns. With reverence, let us kiss His precious little hands and feet, which soon will be nailed to a wooden Cross. Bowing down, let us adore Him, humble and vulnerable not only in the manger, but also in the Holy Eucharist, for it is there that He offers us the fruit of the Tree of Life planted in the Garden of Eden and made fruitful at Gethsemane. He has come as the fruit of Mary’s womb to be with us, to feed us, and to show us the way of love.

Today, on His birthday, may we receive Jesus through Holy Communion with clean and blameless hearts, so that, as in Bethlehem, He may rest peacefully within us!

Come, Lord Jesus, I trust in You!

Acerca del Nacimiento de Nuestro Salvador

“…Y bendito es el fruto de tu vientre, Jesús”

En la pobreza de un establo, sin pompa ni grandeza, Dios irrumpió en la oscuridad del mundo escondido en la vulnerabilidad de un pequeño bebé. ¡Todo el cosmos se llenó del esplendor de la luz divina, y el destino de toda la raza humana cambió radicalmente! ¡La creación gritó de alegría, una estrella maravillosa apareció en el cielo y un coro de ángeles anunció la Buena Nueva a los humildes! ¡Qué dulce y sagrada fue aquella Noche Santa que vió a la humanidad y a la divinidad unidas para siempre! Doblando la rodilla ante el Niño en los brazos de María, miremos sin miedo el rostro mismo de Dios… ¡y seamos sanados!

Los mejores recuerdos que tengo de la Navidad son, por supuesto, cuando era una niña. Desde mi tierna edad me encantaba cantarle lindos villancicos al Niño Jesús en la humilde casa de mi tía. Todos los años organizaba fielmente un pesebre sencillo pero hermoso solo para alegrar a los vecinos. Por las tardes nos reuníamos alrededor de la guardería con otros niños y alegremente hacíamos un “ruido” alegre con castañuelas, panderetas e instrumentos musicales hechos a mano mientras cantábamos (muy fuerte) al Niño Jesús. Luego, encendíamos “velas romanas” que engendraban estrellas de fuego plateadas y saltaban arriba y abajo hasta que las velas se extinguían.

Sin embargo, un año, la noche antes de la víspera de Navidad, un poderoso terremoto destruyó la ciudad. Nuestro amado nacimiento se hizo añicos y se perdió entre los escombros de la casa de mi tía. Pero esa noche sufrimos pérdidas mucho mayores que nos rompieron el corazón y cambiaron nuestras vidas para siempre. Pero, poco a poco, Jesús ha ido organizando los pedazos rotos de mi corazón y haciéndome cada día más humana y compasiva. Pero fue entonces cuando me di cuenta que mientras nosotros vivíamos un duele durante la navidad, el resto del mundo continuaba con sus celebraciones ajeno a nuestro dolor. Y yo había sido culpable muchas veces de la misma indiferencia.

Del mismo modo, muchos en Belén estaban inmersos en distracciones superfluas mientras María y José buscaban con expectativa una habitación donde el Hijo de Dios pudiera ser acogido. Al no encontrar ninguno, María dio a luz a su primogénito en un establo, porque “no había lugar para ellos en la posada”. Envolvió a su bebé en pañales y lo acostó con ternura en un pesebre. Durmiendo plácidamente en esa primera “foto” terrenal donde se alimentaba a los animales, Jesús le dio al mundo el mensaje más elocuente y dulce sobre la Eucaristía, y el más grande de todos, sobre el amor y la humildad. Pero la gente estaba demasiado ocupada para reconocer al Salvador.

¿Y qué tal nosotros hoy? ¿Estamos demasiado ocupados para acogerlo en nuestro corazón o reconocerlo en el rostro de cada persona que vino a redimir y restaurar, especialmente a los pobres, los enfermos, los necesitados, los abandonados? ¿O demasiado entretenidos por las tentaciones del mundo para adorarlo en la Sagrada Eucaristía? El nacimiento de Jesús en la pobreza y la sencillez debería ayudarnos a comprender el mensaje de la Navidad y moderar nuestra fascinación por el consumismo y la autocomplacencia.

Rezo hoy para que nuestros ojos se abran a la vida nueva que Dios quiere darnos incluso en medio de los sufrimientos y las dificultades. ¡No tengamos miedo! ¡Este Niño ha venido para hacernos libres, para darnos alegría y para satisfacer los anhelos más profundos de nuestro corazón! La pequeña Cristina lo entendió bien. Abrazando sus propios sufrimientos con confianza, se concentró en dar a otros el mejor regalo: ¡JESÚS!

Hoy, cantando con sencillez de niños al Niño de Belén, besemos suavemente su frente. Recibirá una corona de espinas. Con reverencia, besemos sus preciosas manitas y piececitos que pronto serán clavados en una Cruz de madera. E inclinándonos, adorémosle, humilde y vulnerable no sólo en el pesebre, sino también en la Sagrada Eucaristía. Es allí donde El nos ofrece el fruto del Arbol de la Vida plantado en el Jardín del Edén y fructificado en Getsemaní. Ha venido como el fruto del vientre de María para estar con nosotros, para alimentarnos y mostrarnos el camino del amor.

*Hoy, en Su cumpleaños, que recibamos a Jesús con corazones limpios e intachables en la Sagrada Comunión, para que, como en Belén, ¡descanse en paz dentro de nosotros!

¡Ven Señor Jesús, en Ti confío!
