I’m a Grandfather… and I’m Already Dreaming
May you live to see your children’s children. (Psalm 128:6)
Not long ago, my first grandson came into this world, and I still struggle to find the words to describe everything I feel. Happiness, pride, gratitude, wonder—a beautiful mix of emotions that fills my heart every time I see him.
It has also been incredible to watch my son and his wife enter this new chapter of life. Seeing them become parents, completely devoted to their baby with that selfless love that only parents truly understand, has been deeply moving.
What an immense blessing from God! The Bible expresses it beautifully:
“Children’s children are a crown to the aged, and parents are the pride of their children.” (Proverbs 17:6)
Now I understand those words in an entirely new way.
I am amazed as I watch our family grow from generation to generation. It is like a strong, flourishing tree extending new branches toward the sky. Each new life is a reminder of God’s greatness and His infinite goodness.
The arrival of a grandchild has made me even more grateful… more aware of God’s generosity… more humbled by His magnificence… more captivated by the purity of His love. For God is infinite love, infinite generosity, and infinite mercy.
Then there are those small moments that feel like everyday miracles. When my grandson looks into my eyes with his beautiful little eyes, studying every expression and every smile as he is discovering the world, I cannot help but marvel. When he smiles back, it touches something deep within my soul. What a miracle life truly is!
Of course, a new mission now begins. My wife, Monica, and I want to surround our grandson with love. We want to pass on values, principles, and faith. We want to spoil him in the special way that only grandparents can, while also helping him grow into a strong, healthy, honorable man of character.
My greatest hope is that, like his parents and grandparents before him, he will learn to love God and live with a sincere desire to honor the Creator who gave us life and love.
His mercy extends to those who fear Him, from generation to generation. (Luke 1:50)
We are experiencing a joy that is difficult to put into words. Every day, we pray that God will guide and protect our first grandson, just as He has guided our children—Daniel, David, and Christina—throughout their lives.
Together with our family, and with the loving memory of Cristy always present in our hearts, we thank God each day for allowing us to share in His mercy and His glory. We also dream about the role we hope to play as grandparents. As the years pass, we aspire to be a source of wisdom and guidance for our grandchild. We hope our lives will serve as examples of respect, integrity, and faith. We want to help him understand his family history, the lessons passed down from our parents and grandparents, and above all, strengthen his sacred relationship with our loving and almighty God.
Yet, if we’re being honest, we dream about simpler things too. We dream of playing with him. We dream of running after him while we still can and continuing to play even when age brings its inevitable aches and pains. We dream of sharing laughter, adventures, celebrations, and also standing beside him during life’s difficult moments. Perhaps one day he will fully realize how much healing his smile brings to our own aches and burdens. We dream of sitting down with him, offering advice when needed, and sharing stories from our own childhoods.
That’s because grandchildren are, in many ways, life renewed. Life blooms again with new laughter, new experiences, and new names. Yet the miracle remains the same: that beautiful gift of continuity across generations that God graciously bestows upon families. As I watch my grandson grow, I find myself already dreaming about all the moments yet to come.
For every one of them, I thank God.
