Temporada de Recomendaciones

Hay muchas formas de describir el tiempo. Con mucha frecuencia y también por conveniencia usamos números, pero durante gran parte de la historia humana hemos utilizado términos cualitativos como “cosecha” u “otoño” para describir la temporada en que las hojas cubren el suelo. Para los adultos que participan en la educación de adolescentes (o realmente en cualquier interacción formal con jóvenes), esta época del año también se conoce como la temporada de recomendaciones.

He escrito cientos de cartas de recomendación para apoyar a jóvenes en su búsqueda de ingreso a la universidad o al mercado laboral. Como maestro de secundaria y ministro de jóvenes en la parroquia, escribir estas cartas es una responsabilidad importante, así como un privilegio. También implica mucho trabajo, y trato de ser lo más específico posible, reforzando los elogios con ejemplos concretos. He experimentado con aplicaciones de inteligencia artificial para ver cómo algunos fragmentos de información se convierten en cinco párrafos de alabanzas, y aunque la gramática es mejor que la mía, los resultados son prácticamente inútiles, por ser tan genéricos y a la vez no ser auténticos.

Afortunadamente, nunca me han pedido que escriba una carta para alguien de quien no pudiera decir cosas positivas. A menudo hablo sobre la determinación y el arduo trabajo de la persona, su empatía y disposición para ayudar a los demás. Informo a cada institución académica que, si aceptan a este estudiante, estarán recibiendo un ser humano valioso, y lo digo en serio.

Esto me hizo pensar: cómo enmendaría mi recomendación si uno de nuestros jóvenes me pidiera que escribiera una carta de referencia para el Reino de Dios. Al reflexionar sobre la vida de los jóvenes en nuestras familias y comunidades, ¿no siempre queremos referirlos al Cielo? Esta carta de referencia no comenzaría con “A quien corresponda” o “Estimado/a señor/a;” de hecho, sería menos una carta y más una oración. Además, sería un poco más extensa que los logros académicos, sociales y deportivos. Mi esposa y yo somos bendecidos con cuatro hijos adultos que tienen vidas plenas. Si tuviera que escribir una recomendación para su admisión en el Reino de Dios, sería como la que escribiría para mí. No omitiría los logros, pero me centraría mucho más en las deficiencias y, honestamente, confiaría en el juez misericordioso, en lugar de los administradores de admisiones que no saben nada de nosotros más allá de lo que está escrito en la página.

La verdad es que nunca he escrito una carta de recomendación para el Reino de Dios. No se espera y, más importante aún, no estoy calificado. Sin embargo, hay un juez calificado; es Jesús. Creo que la toma de decisiones de Jesús no se basaría únicamente en las anécdotas y alabanzas que componen la mayoría de las recomendaciones que reciben los equipos de admisión universitaria. Más bien, la referencia de carácter sería mucho más completa y compleja. A medida que nos acercamos a la temporada de la naturaleza que parece un sepulcro, sería prudente considerar dos cosas: El contenido potencial de nuestra propia carta de recomendación para el Reino de Dios y el Juez misericordioso que lo dio todo para hacer posible nuestra admisión.

Recommendation Season

There are many ways to describe time. For convenience’s sake we use numbers most often, but for much of human history we have used qualitative terms like “harvest” or “fall” to describe the season when the leaves carpet the ground. For adults involved in the education of teenagers (or really any formal interactions with young people), this time of year is also known as recommendation season.

I have written hundreds of letters of recommendation to support young people as they seek entry into college and employment. As a High School Teacher and Parish Youth Minister, writing these letters is an important responsibility as well as a privilege. It is also a lot of work, and I try to be as specific as possible, reinforcing praise with concrete examples. I’ve experimented with artificial intelligence apps to see how some snippets of information could be turned into five paragraphs of glowing accolades and, while the grammar is better than mine, the results are so generic and inauthentic that they are practically useless.

Thankfully, I have never been asked to write a letter for someone that I couldn’t say positive things about. I often write about the person’s determination and hard work, empathy and willingness to help others. I inform each academic institution that they will be welcoming an important human asset if they accept this student, and I mean what I say.

This had me thinking, I wonder how my recommendation would be amended if one of our young people asked me to write a reference letter for the Kingdom of God?  As we reflect on the lives of the young people in our families and communities, aren’t we always wanting to refer them to Heaven? This letter of reference wouldn’t start with “To Whom It May Concern” or “Dear Sir or Madam;” indeed, it would be less of a letter and more of a prayer. Also, it would be a little more extensive than academic, social and athletic achievements. My wife and I are blessed with four adult children who have full lives. If I were to write a recommendation for their admittance into God’s reign, it would be like the one I would write for myself. I wouldn’t skip the accomplishments, but I would focus a lot more on the shortcomings and honestly rely on the merciful Judge, rather than admissions administrators who know nothing about us beyond what is written on the page.

The truth is I have never written a recommendation letter for the Kingdom of God. It’s not expected and more importantly, I’m not qualified. There is a qualified Judge, however; it’s Jesus. I believe Jesus’ decision-making would not be based solely on the anecdotes and accolades that comprise most of the recommendations received by college admissions staff. Rather, the character reference would be much more complete and complex. As we, approach nature’s tomb-like season, we would do well to consider two things:  the potential contents of our own recommendation letter for the Kingdom of God and the merciful Judge who gave up everything to make our admission possible.

Temporada de Discursos de Graduación

Nunca he dado un discurso de graduación. Me parece que es diferente a escribir una homilía. Los fragmentos son más importantes, pero, por supuesto, el enfoque está en la clase de graduados y sus aspiraciones para un futuro feliz y exitoso. Como cristianos católicos, sabemos que nuestro propósito es estar con Dios. Todo lo demás palidece en importancia frente a este objetivo.

Recientemente, un joven pronunció un discurso de graduación que generó cierta controversia. El pateador de los Kansas City Chiefs, ganadores del Super Bowl, habló recientemente en una universidad católica sobre la importancia de su fe católica. Sus ideas sobre la manera particular en que celebra su fe eran claramente convicciones profundamente sentidas. Su sinceridad era evidente y admirable. La enseñanza católica se desarrolla bajo la guía del Espíritu Santo y no siempre encaja fácilmente en el contexto de un discurso de graduación. La controversia surgió cuando el orador pareció sugerir que a las mujeres se les estaba mintiendo si se les decía algo diferente a que el matrimonio y la maternidad deberían ser su principal enfoque.

Aunque la Iglesia definitivamente honra el papel de las mujeres como esposas y madres, la Escritura y la Tradición son claras en que, independientemente de la vocación, el llamado a la santidad universal es nuestra vocación más alta. San Juan Pablo II, quien no era un fanático del movimiento feminista moderno, escribió que las mujeres deberían estar inmersas en todos los niveles de la sociedad: social, económico, científico, artístico y político. Creía que su presencia ayuda a lograr una expresión más auténtica de lo que como sociedad nos esforzamos por alcanzar. En lugar de ser versiones femeninas del logro orientado a objetivos masculinos, creía que la participación de las mujeres ayuda a que nuestros avances sean más inclusivos y humanos. (Carta a las Mujeres, Papa Juan Pablo II, 29 de junio de 1995)

Como he sido empleado de la Iglesia durante la mayor parte de mi vida adulta, mi esposa ha ganado constantemente al menos el doble de mi salario. No hay duda de que su papel en nuestra familia supera con creces el de “proveedora”. Como esposa, madre y “Nanna”, ella es la roca de nuestra familia. Nunca ha habido ninguna sugerencia de que su carrera tenga prioridad sobre su familia. Navegar por la vida no es fácil, por lo que necesitamos la ayuda de Dios; pero los desafíos y frustraciones asociados que todos enfrentamos no son el tipo de fragmentos atractivos que terminan en un discurso de graduación.

Necesitamos recordar que Dios nos creó para ser la mejor versión de nosotros mismos y hay muchas maneras de lograr esto en cuanto a la familia y la carrera. Las elecciones variarán según la necesidad económica. Queremos ser guiados en estas elecciones por la voluntad de Dios; así que, en lugar de sugerir que un camino en la vida es mejor que otro, continúo orando humildemente en las palabras de Thomas Merton por un corazón que pueda discernir:

MI SEÑOR DIOS, no tengo idea de a donde voy. No veo el camino delante de mí. Tampoco me conozco realmente a mí mismo, y el hecho que piense que estoy siguiendo tu voluntad no significa que realmente lo esté haciendo. Pero creo que el deseo de complacerte, de hecho, te complace.

Commencement Address Season

I have never given a commencement address. It seems to me to be different than writing a homily. Sound bites are more important, but of course the focus is on the graduating class and their aspirations for a happy and successful future. As Catholic Christians we know that our purpose is to be with God. Everything else pales in significance to this goal. 

Recently a young man delivered a commencement speech that engendered some controversy. The kicker for the Super Bowl winning Kansas City Chiefs recently spoke at a Catholic college about the importance of his Catholic faith. His ideas about the particular way he celebrates his faith were clearly deeply felt convictions. His sincerity was both evident and admirable. Catholic teaching develops under the guidance of the Holy Spirit and does not always fit easily in the context of a commencement speech. The controversy arose when the speaker seemed to suggest that women were being told lies if they were told anything other than that marriage and motherhood should be their main focus.

Though the Church definitely honors the role of women as wives and mothers, Scripture and Tradition are clear that regardless of vocation the call to universal holiness is our highest calling. Saint John Paul II, who was not a fan of the modern feminist movement, wrote that women should be immersed in all levels of society – social, economic, scientific, artistic and political. He believed that their presence helps bring about a more authentic expression of what we as a society endeavor to achieve. Rather than being female versions of masculine goal‑oriented achievement, he believed that women’s involvement helps make our advancements more inclusive and more humane. (Letter to Women, Pope John Paul II, June 29, 1995)

Because I have been a Church employee for most of my adult life, my wife has consistently earned at least twice my salary. There is no question that her role in our family far exceeds that of “breadwinner.” As a wife, mother and “Nanna,” she is our family’s rock. There has never been any suggestion that her career would take priority over her family. Navigating life is not easy though, so we need God’s help; but the associated challenges and frustrations we all face don’t make for the kind of appealing sound bites that end up in a commencement speech. 

We need to remember that God created us to be the best versions of ourselves and there are many ways to go about this with regard to family and career.  Choices will vary with economic necessity. We want to be guided in these choices by God’s will; so, rather than suggest that one path in life is better than another, I continue to humbly pray in the words of Thomas Merton for a discerning heart:

MY LORD GOD, I have no idea where I am going. I do not see the road ahead of me. Nor do I really know myself, and the fact that I think that I am following your will does not mean that I am actually doing so. But I believe that the desire to please you does in fact please you.

Una Hora a la Semana

El prefijo “trans” significa “ir a través” o “más allá” o “a través de”. Otra definición sugiere que se refiere a “en el otro lado de”. La transfiguración en el Evangelio de hoy muestra cómo la figura de la humanidad visible de Jesús cedió por un breve período para “ir más allá” de su humanidad y revelar su divinidad. La celebración de la Misa es un momento en el que también “vamos más allá” de lo que vemos y experimentamos para tener un encuentro con lo divino. Dado que estamos invitados a consumir la Eucaristía, es difícil imaginar un vínculo más cercano.

Este blog está dirigido a nuestros hijos adultos que no asisten regularmente a Misa, si es que lo hacen. Generalmente están agradecidos por haber sido criados en una familia católica y respetan la elección de sus padres de practicar su fe católica, pero tienen muchas preocupaciones. Aspectos de la historia de la Iglesia, el papel de las mujeres, la enseñanza sobre temas LGBTQ+, la atracción por el mismo sexo, las consecuencias del escándalo de abusos de la Iglesia, han diluido cualquier sentido de obligación de asistir regularmente a Misa. Muchos jóvenes aseguran que pueden orar por sí mismos y argumentan que no hay necesidad de religión organizada. Aunque empatizo con ellos en estos temas, realmente creo que ir a Misa es importante porque es el único lugar donde podemos recibir a Jesús en la Eucaristía.

Admito que, como padre de niños pequeños, no comuniqué adecuadamente lo que creo que es verdad acerca de la Misa y la Eucaristía. Durante la liturgia, en el tiempo y el espacio humano, hay una reunión de ángeles y santos, de hecho, de todos los ejércitos celestiales, para saludar la presencia de Jesús de una manera que no ocurre fuera de la celebración de la Eucaristía. Como diácono que prepara el altar antes de la Liturgia de la Eucaristía, rezo… “Por el misterio de esta agua y este vino, que podamos compartir en la divinidad de Cristo que se humilló a sí mismo para compartir nuestra humanidad.”

Debido a nuestra debilidad humana, es fácil volverse complaciente acerca de la misa cuando en realidad es tan fácil asistir. Después de todo, el compromiso es solo una hora a la semana. Sin embargo, como padre joven, recuerdo haber llegado tarde, callar a los niños mientras buscábamos un asiento en las últimas bancas y escuchar para averiguar si habíamos llegado antes del Evangelio, porque entonces “cuenta”. Sé (y creo que esto es cierto para muchos de mi generación) que no hice un trabajo adecuado explicando la grandeza de la Eucaristía a nuestros hijos. Que Jesús dijo a la multitud: “El que come mi carne y bebe mi sangre permanece en mí y yo en él” (Juan 6:56). Por lo tanto, la consagración y recepción de la Eucaristía es vital para todos nosotros, porque nos ayuda a ser nuestras mejores versiones, independientemente de si creemos o entendemos lo que está sucediendo.

La Eucaristía es conocida como la fuente y la cima de nuestra fe y, al igual que los otros Sacramentos, es un regalo al servicio de la comunidad. “[No] es una poción mágica para el poder o un portal hacia la vida perfecta. Es más bien, un bálsamo, un cálido abrazo, un regalo indescriptible que nos obliga, a su vez, a dar a quienes nos rodean”. (Matthew Kelly, Católico Dinámico)

La palabra “Eucaristía” es una palabra griega que significa “acción de gracias”. Nos reunimos para partir este pan y ser transformados. Sabemos que no somos solo cuerpos físicos o individuos centrados en sí mismos. Podemos ir más allá y experimentar un nuevo alcance de nosotros mismos como transformados, incluso transfigurados, cuando nos reunimos en adoración en la misa. Allí, en la misa, al recibir la sagrada comunión, nos convertimos en aquello que consumimos, el cuerpo de cristo. ¡Qué asombroso es eso!

One Hour a Week 

The prefix “trans” means to “go across” or “beyond” or “through.” Another definition suggests that it refers to “on the other side of.”  The transfiguration in today’s Gospel shows how the outline of Jesus’ visible humanity gave way for a brief period to “go beyond” His humanity to reveal His divinity. The celebration of Mass is a time when we also “go beyond” what we see and experience to have an encounter with the divine. Since we are invited to consume the Eucharist, it is hard to imagine a closer bond.

This blog is addressed to our adult children who do not attend Mass regularly, if at all. They are generally grateful for having been raised in a Catholic family and respectful of their parents’ choice to practice their Catholic faith, but they have many concerns.  Aspects of Church history, the role of women, teaching about LGBTQ+ issues and same sex attraction, as well as the fallout from the Church abuse scandal have diluted any sense of obligation to attend Mass regularly. Many young people report that they can pray by themselves and argue that there is no need for organized religion. Although I empathize with them on these issues, I truly believe that going to Mass is important because it is the only place where we can receive Jesus in the Eucharist. 

I admit, as a parent of younger children, I did not communicate properly what I believe to be true about Mass and the Eucharist. During the liturgy, in human time and space, there is a gathering of Angels and Saints, indeed all the Heavenly Hosts, to greet the presence of Jesus in a way that does not happen apart from the celebration of the Eucharist. As a Deacon who prepares the altar before the Liturgy of the Eucharist, I pray…. “By the mystery of this water and wine may we come to share in the divinity of Christ who humbled himself to share in our humanity.”

Due to our human weakness, it is easy to become complacent about Mass when it is actually so easy to attend. After all, the commitment is only one hour a week. Yet, as a young parent, I remember arriving late, shushing the kids as we looked for a seat near the back, and listening to find out if we had made it in before the Gospel, because then “it counts.” I know (and I think this is true for many of my generation) that I did not do an adequate job explaining the centrality of the Eucharist to our children. That Jesus said to crowd, “Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me and I in him.” (John 6:56) Thus, consecration and reception of the Eucharist is vital for us all, because it helps us to be our best selves, regardless of whether or not we believe or understand what is happening. 

The Eucharist is known as the source and summit of our faith and, like the other Sacraments, it is a gift in service to the community.  “[It] is not a potion for power or a portal to the perfect life.  It is rather, a balm, a warm hug, an indescribable gift that compels us to, in turn, to give to those around us.” (Matthew Kelly, Dynamic Catholic)

The word “Eucharist” is a Greek word meaning “thanksgiving.” We come together to break this bread and be transformed. We know we are not just physical bodies or self-centered individuals. We can go beyond and experience a new understanding of ourselves as transformed, even transfigured, when we come together in worship at Mass. There at Mass, by receiving Holy Communion, we become that which we consume, the Body of Christ.  How awesome is that?!

Tiempo de la Creación

Estamos casi al final del “Tiempo de la Creación” para 2023, pero ¿sabías que tal cosa existía?  Entre el 1 de Septiembre y el 4 de Octubre (fiesta de San Francisco de Asís, santo patrón de la ecología), se anima a las comunidades de fe católica a celebrar el Tiempo de la Creación. El Papa Francisco aceptó esta temporada para la Iglesia Católica Romana en 2015, y luego muchas Iglesias protestantes hicieron lo mismo. Aún así, muchos de nosotros no sabemos sobre ello ni cómo observarlo. 

La búsqueda para cuidar mejor el mundo en el que vivimos comenzó en 1989 con Bartolomé, Patriarca Ecuménico de la Iglesia Ortodoxa Oriental, quien estableció el 1 de Septiembre como el Día Mundial de Oración por el Cuidado de la Creación. Después de todo, nuestro objetivo principal como personas de fe es estar cerca de Dios y, ¿qué mejor manera de acercarnos a Dios que a través de la oración? Porque somos verdaderamente libres cuando somos capaces de discernir y seguir la voluntad de Dios para nuestras vidas. En 2015, el Papa Francisco profundizó más cuando escribió una carta al mundo (Laudato Sí’) recordándonos lo que está en juego si no cuidamos mejor nuestra casa común. Según el Papa Francisco, acercarse a Dios, seguir la voluntad divina y cuidar la creación de Dios se superponen.

Bartolomé y el Papa Francisco, sin embargo, no son los primeros en pedirnos que miremos al mundo natural como fuente de guía. En las Escrituras hebreas, Job sugiere: “…pregunta a las bestias y ellas te enseñarán; las aves del cielo y ellas os lo dirán; pregunta a las plantas de la tierra y ellas te instruirán; y los peces del mar os declararán…. En Su mano está la vida de todo ser viviente y el aliento de todo ser”. (Job 12:7-8, 10) 

Toda la creación está conectada, relacionada, hecha para armonizar con todas las demás partes. Somos parte de un ecosistema cósmico que exige la unidad y armonía de los humanos entre sí, con el mundo natural, con Dios y con nosotros mismos. Al destruir la biodiversidad tan rica del mundo, estamos destruyendo parte de nosotros mismos. La parábola del Evangelio de hoy trata sobre nuestra voluntad de trabajar en la viña y nuestra voluntad de seguir adelante con este compromiso con nuestro mundo natural. ¿Dónde estás tú en la escala de la voluntad? 

Es tentador ignorar las noticias sobre calor excesivo, incendios, inundaciones y cambio climático en general. La crisis de refugiados ciertamente se ha visto agravada por el aumento del nivel del mar y la sequía. Las ideas seculares han separado a los humanos del sentido de lo sagrado y de la plenitud de su propio ser. Al acumular tanta riqueza material en nuestro país, hemos contribuido a la pobreza de tantos otros pueblos. Necesitamos una conversión. El 4 de Octubre, último día del Tiempo de la Creación de este año, el Papa Francisco publicará una publicación de seguimiento de Laudato Sí’. El Papa Francisco nos asegura que observar el Tiempo de la Creación “ofrecerá a los creyentes individuales y a las comunidades una oportunidad adecuada para reafirmar su vocación personal de ser administradores de la creación [y] agradecer a Dios por la maravillosa obra que ha confiado a nuestro cuidado”. Aunque el mundo se ha sorprendido al ver que los líderes católicos abordan cuestiones climáticas, quienes están familiarizados con las Escrituras siempre han comprendido la importancia de cuidar la creación de Dios.

Season of Creation

We are almost at the end of the “Season of Creation” for 2023, but were you aware that such a thing existed?

Between September 1st and October 4th (Feast Day of St. Francis of Assisi, patron saint of ecology), Catholic faith communities are encouraged to celebrate the Season of Creation. Pope Francis accepted this season for the Roman Catholic Church in 2015, then many Protestant Churches did the same. Still, many of us do not know about it or how to observe it. 

The quest to better care for the world in which we live began in 1989 with Bartholomew, Ecumenical Patriarch of the Eastern Orthodox Church, who established September 1st as the World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation.   After all, our primary goal as people of faith is to be close to God and, what better way is there to get close to God than through prayer?  For we are truly free when we are able to discern and follow God’s will for our lives. In 2015, Pope Francis delved deeper when he wrote a letter to the world (Laudato Si’) reminding us of what is at stake if we do not take better care of our common home. According to Pope Francis, getting close to God, following Divine will, and taking care of God’s creation all overlap.

Bartholomew and Pope Francis, though, are not the first to ask us to look to the natural world as a source for guiding us.  In the Hebrew Scriptures, Job suggests, “…ask the beasts and they will teach you; the birds of the air and they will tell you; ask the plants of the earth and they will instruct you; and the fish of the sea will declare to you….  In His hand is the life of every living thing and the breath of every being.” (Job 12:7-8, 10)

All of creation is connected, related, made to harmonize with every other part. We are part of a cosmic ecosystem that demands the unity and harmony of humans with each other, with the natural world, with God and with ourselves. In destroying the rich biodiversity of the world, we are destroying part of ourselves. The parable in today’s Gospel is about our willingness to work in the vineyard and our willingness to follow through on this engagement with our natural world.  Where are you on the scale of willingness?

It’s tempting to tune out the news about excessive heat, fires, floods, and climate change in general. The refugee crisis has certainly been made worse by rising sea levels and drought. Secular ideas have cut off humans from the sense of the sacred and the fullness of their own being. In amassing so much material wealth in our country, we have contributed to the poverty of so many other peoples. We need a conversion. On October 4th, the last day of this years’ Season of Creation, Pope Francis will be releasing a follow-up publication to Laudato Si’. Pope Francis assures us that observing the Season of Creation “will offer individual believers and communities a fitting opportunity to reaffirm their personal vocation to be stewards of creation [and] to thank God for the wonderful handiwork which he has entrusted to our care.” Though the world has been surprised by Catholic leaders addressing climate issues, those familiar with Scripture have always understood the importance of taking care of God’s creation.

Book Club and the Stories We Tell

Since I started as a Prison Chaplain last December, I began a Book Club with the inmates.  We have been reading and discussing books like Les Misérables, Man’s Search for Meaning and, currently, Siddhartha. The main characters of these tales suffer immensely as they journey through life. Happiness isn’t really the point and, as Victor Frankl’s title suggests, it’s not the primary thing we are seeking. What makes life worth living isn’t so much the pursuit of happiness (even if the US Declaration of Independence tells us it is), but rather, having a purpose. For people of faith our purpose is unity with God. Our acts of worship help us transcend our humanity, reminding us that even in our darkest moments, there will be beauty…there will be love. Our suffering connects us to others who suffer in grace-filled ways we don’t fully understand. This sense of belonging is both challenging and awesome and makes life worth living, no matter how hard it is or what losses we suffer.

An important factor in determining whether or not our lives have meaning is how we think about and share our own stories. Telling our stories helps us make sense of our lives and a Book Club can help with this. We choose the story we tell about ourselves and, rather than circumstances determining our story, the way we narrate or tell our story actually shapes what our lives become. An inmate can embody a story that reflects abuse, selfishness and crime or a story of change and redemption. What version of the story do we choose to tell? There may be nothing more important to the quality of our lives than the stories we tell and how we choose to tell them.

Every storyteller needs an “editor” – someone to help reframe the narrative – because, despite our best efforts, we are often not the most honest with ourselves when it comes to our own lives. We can judge our own actions too harshly or alternatively blame everyone else for difficulties that we have created. A Christian Book Club or Bible Study is an opportunity to reflect on Truth.  The central story of our faith, the story that gives meaning to our lives, is Jesus’ story. Though it is a story filled with suffering and loss, it is ultimately a story of Hope, Redemption, New Life and, even, Happiness.

Club de Lectura y las historias que contamos

Desde que me nombraron el pasado Diciembre capellán de una prisión, tuve la idea de comenzar junto con los reclusos un club de lectura. Hemos tenido la oportunidad de leer y discutir libros como Los Miserables, El Hombre en Busca de Sentido, y en este momento estamos leyendo Siddhartha. Nos ha llamado la atención que los protagonistas de estos cuentos tienen algo en común: han sufrido profundamente en su viaje por la vida. La felicidad no es realmente el objetivo, y como sugiere Victor Frankl en el título de su libro, la felicidad no es el objetivo principal que buscamos en la vida. Lo que hace que valga la pena vivir la vida, no es tanto la búsqueda de la felicidad (incluso si la Declaración de Independencia de los Estados Unidos nos dice que lo es), sino más bien tener un propósito. Para nosotros que somos personas de fe, nuestro propósito es estar en unión con Dios. Nuestros actos de adoración ayudan a trascender nuestra humanidad, recordándonos que incluso en nuestros momentos más oscuros, habrá belleza…habrá amor. Nuestro sufrimiento nos puede conectar con otras personas que también están sufriendo, esto puede ser una gracia de Dios, la cual no somos capaces de entender. En esos momentos, también podemos experimentar un sentido maravilloso de pertenencia, que hace que valga la pena vivir la vida, sin importar lo difícil que sea o las perdidas que podemos sufrir.

Un factor muy importante para determinar si nuestras vidas tienen sentido o no, es la manera como compartimos nuestras propias historias. Contarlas, nos ayuda a encontrarle un sentido a nuestras vidas, y a través de este club de lectura, se nos ha hecho más fácil hacerlo. Elegimos la historia que contamos sobre nosotros mismos, y generalmente no son las circunstancias que estamos viviendo las que van a determinar nuestra historia, sino más bien es la manera en que la estamos narrando la que va moldeando nuestra vida. Un preso puede encarnar una historia que refleje abuso, egoísmo y crimen, o vivir una historia de cambio y redención. ¿Qué versión de la historia elegimos contar? Puede que no exista nada más importante para la calidad de nuestras vidas, que las historias que contamos y cómo elegimos decirlas.

Cada narrador necesita de un editor que le ayude a replantear la narrativa, porque a pesar de nuestros mejores esfuerzos, con frecuencia, cuando se trata de nuestras vidas, no somos los más honestos al momento de contar un episodio que hemos vivido. Podemos juzgar nuestras propias acciones con mucha dureza, o podemos culpar a los demás por las dificultades que hemos creado. Un club de lectura de libros católicos nos brinda una oportunidad para reflexionar sobre la verdad. La historia central de nuestra fe, la historia que da sentido a nuestra vida, es la historia de Jesús. A pesar de ser una historia llena de sufrimientos y pérdidas, en última instancia es una historia de esperanza, redención, nueva vida e incluso de felicidad.
