Paula Gómez Victorica was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and lived in Massachusetts from 2001 until December 2024. She is a Certified Spiritual Director and is trained in accompanying individuals through the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius. She is currently completing a Graduate Certificate in Ignatian Spirituality at the Clough School of Theology and Ministry at Boston College, where she also taught Biblical Spirituality through asynchronous online courses.

For the past three years, she served as the Director of Faith Formation and Coordinator of the Hispanic Community at St. Ignatius Jesuit Parish. Since moving to San Antonio in 2025, Paula has continued her ministry as the Ministry and Liturgy Coordinator at a local parish and at the Oblate School of Theology (OST).

Nature’s Spirituality

Did you know that nature has its own spirituality? It helps us connect with our inner selves and feel God’s presence. Who hasn’t walked through a forest, climbed a mountain, or strolled along the seashore without rediscovering their deepest self and connecting to God who is present in nature?

Today, I want to share something I learned in a class with Professor Ron Rolheiser OMI¹, about the spirituality of nature. Nature is also a child of God, and it speaks to us of God. It will be redeemed just as we will. The sun, moon, water, wind, rain, rocks, fire, deserts, oceans, mountains, meadows, snow, ice, heat, cold, and all geography have a huge impact on our souls.

Let’s think about our relationship with nature and how we don’t always consider it. We should let geography shape our souls and engage our senses (sight, smell, taste, hearing, touch) like they’re a Sacrament. In Baptism, the water washes away our sins; in Confirmation and the Anointing of the Sick, the oil is gentle on the skin, and its fragrance permeates us as it heals us. These days, we’re pretty much disconnected from nature. We don’t really think about the air we breathe or the food we eat. Our spirituality will improve when we recognize that, with nature, we have a symbiotic connection with all energy and with the source of all energy, God.

This makes us think that nature (from the Latin word for “to be born”) has a soul like the human soul. Have you ever thought about the life of trees? We say they have a cycle because we see them develop, grow, bear fruit, be patient, age, and die. I’m like a palm tree, but I’d like to be a jacaranda. What kind of tree are you like?

There are many saints that have taught us about our connection with nature. St. Paul insists in his letters that nature speaks to us of God and that it will be redeemed as part of all His Creation. St. Francis wanted to tell us something of this when he personified nature and attempted a conscious dialogue with the fields, the forest, the body, and all of creation. St. Ignatius of Loyola says we can pray through our senses: we can “smell the infinite fragrance and taste the infinite sweetness of divinity” simply by embracing the tree that gave Jesus shade or figs, or by savoring the fresh water He drank on the way to Samaria. Ignatius used this form of prayer while observing the natural world at the Cardoner River where God showed him the whole world at once. This practice of using our senses rather than our brain, delighting in God’s creation, can help us pray more deeply. It’s really powerful to stop and listen to God in nature. This “open book of nature” teaches us new perspectives on God, especially how to find Him in all things.

Others also teach us about the connectedness of God, nature and ourselves. Elizabeth Johnson says God is an Earth-lover. She calls him an “ecological God” because of his relationship with creation and humanity. Peter Wohlleben, in his book The Hidden Life of Trees, talks about how nature, like trees, can shape the soul. Maybe this is because trees have souls of their own. He tells us to slow down, breathe deeply, and pay attention to our surroundings. What can you hear? What do you see? How are you feeling? Trees, like our spiritual lives, go beyond what we can imagine, bring joy, and encourage us to be amazed, no matter how big or small.

I invite you to start the year by taking a walk through the forest of your lives, so that the open book of nature—through what you hear, see, and feel—can nourish both your body and your soul.

May Mary, Mother of God, our Mother, and Queen of all Creation, walk with us. Amen.

Espiritualidad de la Naturaleza

¿Sabían que la naturaleza tiene su propia espiritualidad? Por medio de ella podemos conectarnos con nuestro interior y en su presencia se nos llena el alma de Dios. ¿Quién de ustedes no ha recorrido un bosque, subido montañas o caminado a la orilla del mar sin recobrar su ser más profundo relacionado con Dios que está presente en la naturaleza?

Hoy quiero compartirles algo que aprendí en una clase del profesor Ron Rolheiser OMI¹, sobre la espiritualidad de la naturaleza. Ella también es hija de Dios, nos habla de Dios y será redimida igual que nosotros. El sol, la luna, el agua, los vientos, la lluvia, las rocas, el fuego, los desiertos, los océanos, las montañas, las praderas, la nieve, el hielo, el calor, el frío y toda la geografía juegan un papel muy importante y profundo en nuestras almas.

Reflexionemos sobre nuestra conexión con la naturaleza, no siempre la tenemos en cuenta. Deberíamos dejar que la geografía de forma a nuestras almas, y que nuestros sentidos (vista, olfato, gusto, oído, tacto) se involucren como en un Sacramento. En el Bautismo el agua fresca, gratificante y cristalina nos lava de nuestros pecados, en la Confirmación y la Unción de los enfermos, el aceite es suave en la piel y su olor nos impregna mientras nos sana. Hoy en día nuestras vidas están divorciadas de la naturaleza; ya no estamos conectados con el aire que respiramos ni con los alimentos que comemos. Nuestra espiritualidad será más sana cuando reconozca que, con la naturaleza, formamos una conexión simbiótica con toda la energía y con la fuente de toda energía, Dios.

Esto nos lleva a pensar que la naturaleza (en latín nacer) tiene un alma análoga al alma humana. ¿Has pensado alguna vez en la vida de los árboles? Decimos que tienen un ciclo porque nos enseñan a desarrollarnos, crecer, dar fruto, tener paciencia, envejecer y morir. Yo creo que soy como las Palmeras, aunque me gustaría ser como un Jacarandá, ¿y tú a qué árbol te pareces?

Muchos santos y santas nos han enseñado sobre la conexión de nuestras almas con la naturaleza. San Pablo en sus cartas afirma que la naturaleza nos habla de Dios y que ésta será redimida como parte de toda su Creación. San Francisco quería decirnos algo de esto cuando personificaba la naturaleza e intentaba un diálogo consciente con el campo, el bosque, el cuerpo, al cantar al hermano sol, hermana luna y todas las creaturas. San Ignacio de Loyola sugiere que podemos orar por nuestros sentidos: «huele la fragancia infinita y saborea la dulzura infinita de la divinidad, simplemente abraza el árbol que le dio sombra o higos a Jesús, o saborea el agua fresca que bebió camino a Samaria». Es una forma de oración que él usó observando la naturaleza en el río Cardoner, donde Dios le mostró todo el mundo a la vez. Esta práctica de deleitarse en la creación de Dios puede conducir a una oración más profunda. Detenerse y escuchar a Dios en la naturaleza es poderoso. Este “libro abierto de la naturaleza” nos enseña nuevas perspectivas sobre Dios, especialmente a encontrarlo en todas las cosas.

Autores modernos también nos enseñan la relación de Dios con su creación y con nosotros mismos. Dios es amante de la Tierra, dice Elizabeth Johnson, es un “Dios ecológico” en relación con la creación y la humanidad. Peter Wohlleben, en su libro La vida oculta de los árboles, explora cómo la naturaleza física, al igual que los árboles, puede ayudar a moldear el alma, posiblemente porque los árboles poseen alma propia. Nos anima a reducir la velocidad, respirar profundamente y observar nuestro entorno. ¿Qué oyes? ¿Qué ves? ¿Qué sientes? Los árboles, al igual que nuestra vida espiritual, trascienden nuestra imaginación, traen alegría y nutren nuestra capacidad de asombro, ya sea grande o pequeña.

Los invito a que comencemos el año caminando juntos por el bosque de nuestras vidas para que el libro abierto de la naturaleza —por medio de lo que oímos, vemos y sentimos— nutra tanto nuestro cuerpo como nuestra alma.

¡Que María, Madre de Dios, Madre Nuestra y Reina de toda la Creación, camine con nosotros! Amen

Friendship

A few weeks ago in my country, we celebrated Friend’s Day. Argentines are well known for being very close friends, sometimes very intense, but always present in good and bad times!

I was wondering how to honor this particular quality of my culture when the readings of that Sunday’s Mass, enlightened my reflection.

The first reading for the day was Genesis 18:1-10 where Abraham, the friend of God, was an unwitting servant of the Holy Trinity. He was humble, gentle, attentive, and open, offering, with his wife and those in his household, what he had: food, company, service, and the shade of a tree.

The Gospel reading that same day was Luke 10:38-42, the story of Martha and Mary, Jesus’ friends, who always welcomed him into their home with joyful generosity. Each in her own way, was willing to go out of her way to please their friend, Jesus, in a true, discreet, and festive encounter.¹

These two readings reminded me of Saint Thomas Aquinas’s Treatise on Friendship which I had read many years ago. There I learned the theory of friendship. Aristotle said that humans cannot live without friends, that friendship is a necessity for human life, and Saint Thomas Aquinas elaborated on this concept² explaining that, in order to act virtuously, humans need the help of friends. Friends sense our sorrows and come to console us in simple fellowship, without needing to say many words. That is why friendship is noble and profound. True friendship arises from free choice based on a similarity of tastes, concerns, and desires, even if we sometimes don’t share the same activities. We are filled with joy through mutual enrichment. We feel understood and extended. Among friends, we help each other to be better, to be saints, because “alter ipse amicus”— my friend is another self. In this union between self and friend or “other self,” feelings are discerned, and secrets are discovered without profaning them, as if they were our own. In John 15:15, when Jesus tells his disciples that he does not call them servants but friends, he is trusting them to enter that sacred realm where only God has access. There, friends can savor the sweetness of present goodness, rejoice in past goodness, and taste the hope of future goodness. True friends pacify our souls. Friendship is a privilege, a communion of life; to find a friend is to find a treasure.³

Fortunately, God has placed many people in my path, and I have had the privilege of having a wonderful group of friends since my childhood. The girls and I communicate every day. What we think and feel is very important to all of us, and we are free to express ourselves. Three of us live in the USA, and two have already gone to the Father’s house. This daily communication provides us with a moment of rest and fellowship.⁴ It’s a way of saying things—sometimes without saying them—it’s a way of being open to whatever comes our way, whether it’s a comment, a question, a feeling of sadness, or sharing what’s happening in our homes, and of course, sharing photos of our grandchildren!

Over the past 24 years, I’ve lived in this country, with a different culture and language, but I’ve been blessed with precious friends, some of whom may be reading this blog. Saint Thomas said that the imperfect happiness of this world requires the indispensable presence of a friend because a friend soothes and sustains us, elevates and perfects us. Death can temporarily break a friendship, but in God’s beatific vision, the complement of happiness will be the presence of a friend. In eternity, when the final meeting blossoms and our coexistence is indestructible, we will achieve the perfection of friendship. I will die with the hope of that meeting.

La Amistad

Hace unas semanas en mi país se celebraba el día del Amigo. ¡Los argentinos somos bien conocidos por ser amigueros, a veces muy intensos, pero siempre presentes en las buenas y en las malas!

Pensaba como honrar esta particularidad en nuestra cultura cuando las Lecturas de la Misa del Domingo iluminaron mi reflexión.

La primera lectura fue Genesis 18:1-10, donde Abraham, el amigo de Dios, recibió a la Santísima Trinidad sin saberlo. Fue humilde, delicado, atento y abierto ofreciendo con su esposa y los de su casa lo que tenía: la comida, la compañía, el servicio y la sombra de un árbol.

En el Evangelio, Lucas 10:38-42, encontramos a Marta y María las amigas de Jesús, que siempre lo recibían en su casa con alegre generosidad. Cada una a su manera, estaban dispuestas a salir de sí mismas para complacer al amigo en un encuentro verdadero, discreto y en clima de fiesta.¹

Estas lecturas me recordaron el tratado sobre la amistad de Santo Tomas de Aquino que leí hace muchísimos años. Allí aprendí la teoría de la amistad. Aristóteles, decía que el hombre no puede vivir sin amigos, que la amistad es una necesidad para la vida humana y Santo Tomás de Aquino explicaba² que el hombre para obrar virtuosamente necesita el auxilio de los amigos. El amigo adivina las penas y acude a consolar en simple convivencia, sin discursos. Por eso la amistad es noble y honda. La verdadera amistad surge de la libre elección fundada en una semejanza de gustos, inquietudes y voluntades, aunque a veces no compartamos las mismas actividades. Nos embriaga de gozo el enriquecimiento mutuo. Nos sentimos entendidos y prolongados. Entre amigos nos ayudamos para ser mejores, para ser santos. “Amicus is alter ipse”, mi amigo es otro yo y en esta unión se adivinan los sentimientos y se descubren los secretos sin profanarlos, como si fueran propios. Cuando Jesús les dice a sus discípulos que no los llama siervos sino amigos está confiando en ellos para que entren en esa zona sagrada donde solo Dios tiene acceso. Allí el amigo puede saborear la dulzura del bien presente, se goza del bien pasado y pregusta la esperanza del bien futuro. El amigo verdadero pacifica nuestra alma. La amistad es un privilegio, es comunión de vida, hallar un amigo es hallar un tesoro.³

Dios ha puesto a mucha gente en mi camino y tengo el privilegio de tener desde, mi niñez y juventud, un lindo grupo de amigos. Con las chicas nos comunicamos todos los días. Lo que pensamos y sentimos es muy importante para todas y allí somos libres de decir lo que nos pasa. Tres vivimos en USA y dos ya partieron a la casa del Padre. Esa comunicación diaria nos procura un momento de descanso y fraternidad,⁴ es un decir -a veces sin decirlo- es un estar abiertas a lo que venga, ¡ya sea un comentario, una pregunta, un bajón o compartir lo que pasa en nuestras casas y por supuesto compartir las fotos de los nietos!

En los últimos 24 años he vivido en este país, con diferente cultura e idioma, pero he sido bendecida con preciosas amistades, algunos estarán leyendo este blog. Santo Tomás decía que la felicidad imperfecta de este mundo requiere la imprescindible presencia del amigo porque el amigo nos alivia y nos sostiene, nos eleva y nos perfecciona. La muerte puede quebrar temporalmente una amistad, pero, en la visión beatífica de Dios, el complemento de la felicidad será la presencia del amigo. En la eternidad, cuando florezca el encuentro definitivo y la convivencia sea indestructible, alcanzaremos la amistad perfecta. Moriré con la esperanza de ese encuentro.

Growing Our Hope: The Way to God

The Second Vatican Council emerged as a response to contemporary man. Its message of pastoral renewal and spiritual transformation traced a horizon of hope-filled lights on the path of humanity.

I feel that I am a spiritual child of its teachings, which marked my path towards God. That faithful God who invites me, and all of us, to follow him by being faithful daily and to hope against all hope. We live in a world without God, a world which finds it hard to believe and a world which does not know how to wait. The Council teaches us that the mission of Christians is to put God back in temporal tasks, in the midst of our work and our actions. The Council was a moment in the history of the Church in which God transformed the Church in a special way.

Pope Francis invites us to live the Holy Year of the Redemption as pilgrims of the hope already alive on the horizon of the Conciliar Church. He stated in his February 2022 letter announcing the Jubilee Year of 2025:

We must keep the flame of hope alive that has been given to us and do everything possible so that each one of us may regain the strength and certainty to face the future with an open mind, a trusting heart, and a broad outlook. The coming Jubilee can do much to restore a climate of hope and trust, signifying a new rebirth that we all perceive as urgent.

Everything is connected! In these words, I see the continuation of the Council and the Church’s teaching on hope. We are pilgrims, searching for God, and the virtue of hope encourages and compels us to continue walking, searching, and living our faith that seeks and finds as we go.

For me, it is important to look for signs of hope that bear witness to God’s presence in the world and thus keep the flame of hope burning as the Pope asks us to do. Hope, a theological virtue, orients us and indicates the direction and purpose of our existence. We are invited to rejoice in it, to let it remain in us as an anchor, so that the faith and love that we want to live and share with joy and enthusiasm through hope may grow there. All this happens because we believe in a definitive encounter with the Lord of glory. We live in expectation of his coming and in the hope of living forever in him. With death, life does not end but is transformed forever.¹

When my mother died a few days ago, this dimension of eternity became a strong invitation to make a life that lasts forever the goal of my earthly pilgrimage. We know that after death we will be able to fully enjoy the earthly desire that awakens hope: to know Jesus more intimately because life will be eternal in his presence; to love him more intensely because we will be filled with his love, and to follow him more closely because we will have found him. Finally, our happiness will be complete, because we will have reached our goal, the full realization of our vocation. After death, I will exist forever in the Love that does not disappoint and from which nothing and no one will ever be able to separate me.²

Hope has a special meaning for me in this Holy Year. Guided by the Bull of the Holy Father, I wanted to share it with you readers and friends, so that it may carry us beyond the trials and pain of loss. May the gift of hope that we all ask for, for one another, help us to journey through life without losing sight of the greatness of the goal to which we have been called, heaven.

Creciendo en Nuestra Esperanza: El Camino hacia Dios

El Concilio Vaticano II surgió como respuesta al hombre contemporáneo. Su mensaje de renovación pastoral y de transformación espiritual trazaba un horizonte de luces llenas de esperanza sobre el camino de la humanidad.

Yo me siento hija espiritual de sus enseñanzas que marcaron mi camino hacia Dios. Ese Dios fiel que nos invita a seguirlo siendo cotidianamente fieles y a esperar contra toda esperanza. Vivimos en un mundo sin Dios, un mundo que le cuesta creer y que no sabe esperar. El Concilio nos enseña que la misión de los cristianos es volver a poner a Dios en las tareas temporales, en medio de nuestro quehacer y nuestro obrar. El Concilio fue un momento en la historia de la Iglesia en el que Dios la transformó de manera especial.

El Papa Francisco nos invita a vivir el Año Santo de la Redención como peregrinos de la esperanza ya viva en el horizonte de la Iglesia Conciliar. El afirmó en su carta de febrero de 2022 anunciando el Año Jubilar de 2025:

“Debemos mantener encendida la llama de la esperanza que nos ha sido dada, y hacer todo lo posible para que cada uno recupere la fuerza y la certeza de mirar al futuro con mente abierta, corazón confiado y amplitud de miras. El próximo Jubileo puede ayudar mucho a restablecer un clima de esperanza y confianza, como signo de un nuevo renacimiento que todos percibimos como urgente.”

¡Todo se relaciona! Veo en estas palabras la continuidad del Concilio y las enseñanzas de la Iglesia sobre la esperanza. Somos peregrinos, vamos buscando a Dios y la virtud de la esperanza nos alienta e impulsa a seguir andando, buscando y viviendo nuestra fe que busca y encuentra en el andar.

Para mí, es importante buscar los signos de esperanza que testimonien la presencia de Dios en el mundo y así mantener la llama de la esperanza encendida como nos pide el Papa. La esperanza, virtud teologal, nos orienta e indica la dirección y la finalidad de nuestra existencia. Estamos invitados a alegrarnos en ella, a que se quede en nosotros como un ancla, para que allí crezca la fe y el amor que con la esperanza queremos vivir y compartir con gozo y entusiasmo. Todo esto sucede porque creemos en un encuentro definitivo con el Señor de la gloria. Vivimos a la espera de su venida y en la esperanza de vivir para siempre en El. Con la muerte «la vida no termina, sino que se transforma»¹ para siempre.

Al morir mi madre hace unos días esta dimensión de la eternidad se ha convertido en una fuerte invitación a hacer de la vida que dura para siempre la meta de mi peregrinación terrena. Sabemos que después de la muerte podremos gozar en plenitud el deseo terreno que despierta la esperanza: de conocer a Jesús más íntimamente porque la vida será eterna en su presencia; de amarlo más intensamente porque estaremos llenos de su amor, y de seguirlo más de cerca, porque lo habremos encontrado. Por fin nuestra felicidad será completa, porque habremos llegado a nuestra meta, a la realización plena de nuestra vocación. Después de la muerte existiré por siempre el Amor que no defrauda y del que nada ni nadie podrá separarme jamás.²

La esperanza, tiene un significado especial para mí en este Año Santo. Guiada por la Bula del Santo Padre, quise compartirlo con ustedes lectores y amigos, para que nos transporte más allá de las pruebas y del dolor de una pérdida. Que el don de la esperanza que todos pedimos, unos por otros, nos ayude a peregrinar por la vida sin perder de vista la grandeza de la meta a la que hemos sido llamados, el cielo.

Arte y Oración

En la pintura sobre la Anunciación, la sencillez de sus líneas, la presencia Trinitaria, la bóveda azul, la mirada de confianza y júbilo del Angel anunciador, vestido con un traje ceñido a la cintura que cae en grandes pliegues que cubren sus pies, y la pureza del «Sí» que cruza los brazos en señal de humilde aceptación siempre me cautivaron. Comenzaba el momento redentor de aquella tarde en el Edén cuando nuestros padres, ahora sumisos y arrepentidos, fueron tentados por el mal. Las figuras del Arcángel y la joven doncella son delicadas y transmiten dulzura y serenidad. Los colores son suaves y proporcionan delicadeza a los personajes. En esta obra maestra del arte renacentista, todo invita a elevar la mente a aquel momento redentor en que el hijo de Dios es anunciado como Salvador de la humanidad. Esta pintura tiene una función devocional hacia María y contribuye a fortalecer la fe de quienes la miramos. Se dice que su autor, Guido di Pietro (Fra Angelico), nunca tomó los pinceles sin antes rezar.

Hace algunos años estuve de pie frente a ella, en el Convento de San Marco, en Florencia, durante más de una hora, estática, sin poder moverme y sumergida en su significado. Había una riqueza oculta como una fuente de la que brota un río de gracia y en la que se escucha la voz de Dios. Ese día entendí que a veces lo que nos cambia no es lo que hacemos, sino el tiempo que pasamos con el Señor en oración como dice el P. Bert Daelemans SJ en su artículo “Los Ejercicios y el Arte”.

El arte ofrece un campo infinito para la oración, crea espacios para escuchar a Dios. En este caso, la obra ofrece un momento de la historia de la salvación que nunca terminamos de meditar, entender o celebrar. La Virgen se hace más cercana, sensible e incluso corpórea. Al mirar esta pintura, puedo imaginarme, entender, lo que pasó y la experiencia de entrar en el misterio de Dios es de una abrumadora fecundidad. Rezar con el arte ofrece una comunicación directa con la realidad, sugiere, evoca y no obliga a una única lectura o interpretación.

Contemplar una obra de arte abre un espacio que señala el camino a seguir. En el texto bíblico (Lc 1, 26-38), el espacio se amplía y surgen preguntas para conectar lo contemplado con las experiencias de vida. La palabra de Dios se encarna concretamente, dejando un espacio abierto en el que podemos entrar.

Esta imagen de la Anunciación me invita a ponerme en marcha, a seguir adelante, a vivir el Adviento cuando llegan las promesas de Salvación! Sentir y gustar interiormente estas cosas son las que llenan mi corazón. En parte, esta experiencia de transformación profunda, que mueve los sentidos y eleva el alma, se la debo a mi madre, que siempre me guio a mirar más allá y a adentrarme en las escenas de las pinturas que me mostraba. Gracias a ella, rezar con el arte se me hizo fácil. Rezar con el arte significa poder encontrarme con Dios y con su mensaje en la obra. Es importante darle a la obra su tiempo y su espacio, admirarla en silencio y escuchar lo que quiera comunicarnos. Para mí es escuchar lo que el Espíritu Santo quiera decirme a través de ella. La contemplación, en efecto, es un ejercicio de escucha; rezar con el arte significa esencialmente contemplar y escuchar lo que Dios dice dentro de nosotros.

Espero volver a ver en persona el cuadro de la Anunciación del Beato Angélico, donde la redención comienza en el vientre virginal de la humilde servidora del Señor.

Art and Prayer

In the Painting of the Annunciation, the simplicity of the lines, the Trinitarian presence, the blue vault, the look of confidence and jubilation of the Angel announcer who is dressed in a garment tight at the waist that falls in large folds that cover his feet, and the purity of the “Yes” that crosses his arms in a sign of humble acceptance has always captivated me. The redemptive moment of that afternoon in Eden when our parents, now submissive and repentant, were tempted by evil was beginning. The figures of the Archangel and the young maiden are delicate and convey sweetness and serenity. The colors are soft and provide delicacy to the characters. In this masterpiece of Renaissance art, everything invites to elevate the mind to that redemptive moment in which the Son of God is announced as the Savior of mankind. This painting has a devotional function towards Mary and contributes to the strengthening of the faith of those who look at it. It is said that its author, Guido di Pietro (Fra Angelico), never took up his brushes without first praying.

Some years ago, in the Convent of San Marco in Florence, I stood in front of The Annunciation for more than an hour, static, unable to move, immersed in its meaning. There was a hidden richness like a fountain from which flows a river of grace and in which the voice of God is heard. That day, I understood that sometimes what changes us is not what we do, but the time we spend with the Lord in prayer.

Art offers an infinite field for prayer; it creates spaces to listen to God. In this case, the work offers a moment in salvation history that we never finish meditating on, understanding or celebrating. The Virgin becomes closer, more sensitive and even corporeal. Looking at this painting, I can imagine and understand what happened. The experience of entering into the mystery of God is of overwhelming fruitfulness. Praying with art offers direct communication with reality; it suggests, evokes and does not force a single reading or interpretation.

Contemplating a work of art opens a space that points the way forward. In the biblical text (Luke 1:26-38), the space is enlarged, and questions arise to connect what is contemplated with life experiences. The Word of God is concretely incarnated, leaving an open space into which we can enter.

This image of the Annunciation invites me to get going, to move forward, to live Advent when the promises of Salvation arrive! Inwardly feeling and tasting these things is what fills my heart. In part, I owe this experience of profound transformation which moves the senses and uplifts the soul to my mother, who always guided me to look beyond and into the scenes of the paintings she showed me. Thanks to her, praying with art became easy for me. Praying with art means being able to encounter God and his message in the artwork. It is important to give the work of art its time and space, to admire it in silence, and to listen to what it wants to communicate to us. It means listening to what the Holy Spirit wants to tell me through it. Contemplation is an exercise in listening; praying with art essentially means contemplating and listening to what God is saying within us.

I hope to see again in person the painting of the Annunciation by Blessed Angelico, where Redemption begins in the virginal womb of the humble Servant of the Lord.

The Jubilee and the Opening of the Holy Door. An Invitation to Pray

The doors of the papal basilicas and those of all the cathedrals of the world will be opened during the Jubilee Year 2025 as a “special occasion to meditate on the great gift of divine mercy that always awaits us and on the importance of interior conversion, which is necessary to be able to live the spiritual gifts given to pilgrims.”¹ Pope Francis invites us to prepare for this time by intensifying prayer as a personal dialogue with God; an invitation that should lead us to reflect on our faith and our commitment in today’s world, in the various areas in which we are called to live. During this year, we can become authentic “pilgrims of hope,” walking toward the Lord who awaits us all with arms of mercy and forgiveness.

During his pontificate, Francis has been teaching us that to pray is to live in the present immersed in the mercy of God. This is what Jesus, misericordiae vultus (the face of mercy), came to teach us with His life. His mercy is an ocean that floods us in an incomprehensible abyss that touches the depths of our souls. After a time of prayer, the conversation flows as when we talk to a friend whom we admire, thank, ask for forgiveness, share our material needs, and ask for advice. Then the sweet balm of His love pours into us, provoking intense moments of consolation. Here in our condition as creatures before our Creator is a marvelous moment of balance between contemplation and action. The wounded hand of Jesus touches our hearts in its physical dimension. There is no mercy without contact, no contemplation that does not lead to action. The Father waits for us, invites us to an encounter, and with His embrace, the proper dimension of mercy is given in time and space. We must pray to prepare ourselves to receive the mercy of the Father in this Holy Year, to feel in our hearts the wounded hands of the Son who sends us to heal the wounds of humanity.

During the rest of 2024, the Pope wants us to prepare ourselves to receive the mercy of God, our Father, who always waits for us and forgives us in a special way during the Jubilee. The Pope wants all of us to deeply live this event of grace and to experience the strength of God’s hope. In March, he said that “prayer transforms us: it soothes anger, sustains love, multiplies joy, and gives us the strength to forgive.”² When we enter through the Holy Door, we are transformed to live a new life touched by God’s mercy. The Pope hopes that in the months leading up to the Jubilee Year, after having spent more time in the presence of God, listening to Him and adoring Him, we will offer Him a great symphony of prayer. Therefore, he said, the goal for this year is to foster a relationship with God by filling our hearts with faith, hope and charity.

The document “Teach Us to Pray” for Living the Year of Prayer in preparation for the Jubilee 2025, says that prayer should be for the Christian “the breath of life” capable of never being interrupted “even when we sleep.” Prayer is the place where we recognize ourselves as part of the “one family of God” because we call God Our Father. Everything in the Church is born in prayer, and everything grows thanks to prayer. It is prayer that opens the door to the Holy Spirit, who inspires us to go forward.

May Mary, Our Lady of the Way and of Hope, open the doors of our hearts to mercy and forgiveness, fruits of the Jubilee Holy Year.

Jubileo y apertura de la Puerta Santa

Invitación a rezar

La Puertas de las basílicas papales y las de todas las Catedrales del mundo, durante el Año Santo jubilar 2025, se abrirán en una “ocasión especial para meditar sobre el gran don de la misericordia divina que siempre nos espera y sobre la importancia de la conversión interior, necesarios para poder vivir los dones espirituales otorgados a los peregrinos”.¹ El Papa Francisco nos invita a preparar este tiempo intensificando la oración como diálogo personal con Dios, una invitación que debe conducirnos a reflexionar sobre nuestra fe, sobre nuestro compromiso en el mundo de hoy, en los diversos ámbitos donde estamos llamados a vivir. En este año podremos convertirnos en auténticos “peregrinos de esperanza” que caminan hacia el Señor, que nos espera a todos los humanos con brazos de misericordia y perdón.

Durante su Pontificado, Francisco nos enseña que rezar es vivir en el presente la misericordia de Dios que Jesús, misericordiae vultus (el rostro de la misericordia), vino a enseñarnos con su vida. Su misericordia es un océano que nos inunda en un abismo incomprensible tocando lo más profundo de nuestra alma. Después de un rato de oración la conversación fluye como cuando hablamos con un amigo que admiramos, le damos gracias, le pedimos perdón, le compartimos nuestras necesidades materiales, y al que también le pedimos consejo. Entonces el dulce bálsamo de su amor se derrama en nosotros provocando intensos momentos de consolación. Aquí en nuestra condición de criatura frente a su Creador se da un maravilloso momento de equilibrio entre contemplación y acción. La mano herida de Jesús toca mi corazón en su dimensión física. No hay misericordia sin contacto, no hay contemplación que no lleve a la acción. El Padre nos espera, nos invita a un encuentro, y con el abrazo se da la dimensión propia de la misericordia en el tiempo y el espacio. Tenemos que orar para prepararnos a recibir la misericordia del Padre en este Año Santo, para sentir en el corazón las manos heridas del Hijo que nos envían a sanar las heridas de la humanidad.

El Papa quiere que nos prepararemos a recibir la misericordia de nuestro Padre Dios que siempre nos espera y nos perdona de una manera especial en el Jubileo. El Papa quiere que todos vivamos profundamente este acontecimiento de gracia y experimentemos la fuerza de la esperanza de Dios. En Marzo comentaba que “la oración nos transforma: apacigua la ira, sostiene el amor, multiplica la alegría, infunde la fuerza para perdonar”.² Cuando entremos por la Puerta Santa seremos transformados para vivir una vida nueva tocados por la Misericordia de Dios. El Papa quiere que en el Año Jubilar después de haber estado más tiempo en presencia de Dios para escucharlo y adorarlo, le ofrezcamos una gran sinfonía de oración. Por eso, dijo, el objetivo de este año es favorecer la relación con Dios mientras llenamos nuestro corazón de fe, esperanza y caridad.

El documento “Enséñanos a Orar2” para Vivir el Año de la Oración en preparación al Jubileo 2025, dice que la oración debería ser para el cristiano «el respiro de la vida» capaz de no interrumpirse nunca «ni siquiera cuando dormimos». La oración es el lugar en el cual los cristianos nos reconocemos parte de la «única familia de Dios», porque llamamos a Dios Padre Nuestro. Todo en la Iglesia nace en la oración, y todo crece gracias a la oración. La oración es la que abre la puerta al Espíritu Santo, que es quien nos inspira para ir adelante.

Que María, Nuestra Señora del Camino y de la Esperanza abra las puertas de nuestros corazones a la misericordia y el perdón que son frutos del Año Santo Jubilar.
